ZuBoutique Website Revamped, New Blog From Davey

The ZuBoutique website has been revamped with a black background.

Also, Davey posted a blog on the site wishing everyone a happy halloween and updating us on new goodies to come. He wrote:

It’s Fall, and with the ever changing colors of the leaves and our new website look comes the Great Zukins! Keep slicing those glowing orbs! I look forward to seeing what you all have carved and awarding some goodness in exchange for your skills.

Also with the season will come tee shirts featuring graveyards, bats, zombies and unrealistically romantic sex-fearing vampires…but not from us. We, on the other hand, will be releasing new limited shirts for the compassionate, evolved and lucid few who like to fly their flags with style. Wait til you see these pieces. They are just beyond. In addition to these iconic tees we will have for you an extremely limited batch of shirts honoring another great artist who has recently, sadly, left us all. All of this should be yours before turkicide shames the nation.

That’s the what the immediate ZU future holds right now but new jewelry is also in the works and the Zu shoes are looking fantastic as well. I’ve been wearing mine…it’s like walking on blue sunshine I tell ya.

happy pumpkin pie!

Weekend Discussion: AFI Acoustic or Orchestra?

Here's the second installment in our new weekly discussion series. Click here to see last week's discussion.

Many of us have seen AFI play live at one time or another, but I'm guessing most of you haven't seen AFI play live acoustically... or backed by an orchestra. Would you rather see them acoustic or orchestral? Which songs do you feel would be good to hear in those formats?

I know this is something I've never thought about, so this discussion should be interesting. Also, you can vote in the new poll on the left.

Two AFI interviews on MTV

MTV just posted two new interview with AFI. The first one features their most memorable Houston tour moment, and in the other one Hunter choose Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" as their favorite Halloween movie.

Thanks to Brittany for the tip!

House Of Blues Review at BCHeights.com

There is a review of the House Of Blues show in today's issue of the BCHeights. A highlight from the review:

"Sunday's underwhelming turnout illustrates more than anything how a band can alienate old fans by continually redefining itself. Crash Love represents another step in the band's neverending creative evolution. Not only is it considerably warmer than the band's previous two albums Decemberunderground and Sing the Sorrow, but it is also more musically complex. The album evokes nostalgia for the band's punk rock past, which is a difficult task since punk songs are typically short, fast, and simplistic."

You can read the full article here. Thanks to Mike for the link!

Blaqk Audio: "Bright Black Heaven"

Melissa pointed us to an interview made by MyYearbook with Jade. These are the highlights:
  • Jade's favorite song is Beautiful Thieves. It's the first song that was written for CL.
  • Jade will work on a VNV Nation remix
  • The Blaqk Audio record is done and is called "Bright Black Heaven"
Clcik here to read the entire, long interview...

Boston's WFNX Radio Interview with AFI now up!

WFNX Radio just posted an audio interview with Jai, a long time friend of mine. He won a contest and got to ask them about End Transmission, old songs, the inspiration behind Crash Love, and gold.

This interview was on October 24th.

Boston Herald Posts Review of Boston Show

The Boston Herald has psoted a review of the AFI show at the House of Blues on Sunday. The review says:
Sunday, Havok came across as a punk rocker only when the song dictated. Taking the stage in a sparkly white suit, he cavorted like a fey, hyper-kinetic lounge singer while belting out the whimsical “Too Shy To Scream.” He transformed into an incensed, agonized fiend to wail his face off on “Death of Seasons.” Havok even channeled Winona Ryder’s character from “Beetle Juice” during “Despair Factor,” and proclaimed, “My whole life is a dark room.”
You can read the full review here.

Davey Talks About Straight Edge Revenge

AlternativePress.com posted an article about Davey's rendition of Project X's "Straight Edge Revenge" that he performed with Ceremony. Davey said:
"Ceremony were on tour and I think their drummer couldn't join them on the road," Havok says, "and they had a drummer of Have Heart playing for them, who is a straight-edge kid. That made three out of the four members of the band for that evening be straight-edge kids. So they asked me if I wanted to sing that night, if they would play 'Straight Edge Revenge,' which would put four vegan straight-edge kids onstage -- which is the way it would have to be if you're going to sing that song. And it was really fun." He laughs. "It was a pleasure to join them."

"There's one thing that will unify people beyond any sort of artistic likes or dietary likes," Havok says. "And that is being straight edge. I'm straight edge; those kids that were singing along with me were straight edge. That's what that was about. It wasn't about Davey Havok, it wasn't about Ceremony: It was about four dudes playing militant straight edge, and 50 kids feeling it."
You can view the full article here.

AFI Land Spots on Alternative Press' 100 Best Singles of the Past Decade

In the most recent issue of Alternative Press, which AFI graces the cover of, the band has gotten 3 singles on the magazine's 100 Best Singles of the Decade. Days of The Pheonix landed at number 80 with a statement saying:
"Considering how AFI have grown as songwriters in the past nine years, this track seems downright quaint with its Social-Distortion-at-the-goth-punk-club vibe. (And the "ohhh"s in the chorus remind us of Def Leppards "Photograph.") Regardless, this song is still crucial to their mythology, displaying a vision toward something bigger than punk's one-two-fuck-you convention."
Girl's Not Grey came in at 63 and Miss Murder landed the 30th spot. According to Altpress.com, "Silver and Cold" just missed the countdown coming in at number 106.

If you want to see who else made the list, be sure to pick up the magazine when it hits newsstands.

Trivia Tuesday: Very Proud of Ya

We're starting a new weekly feature called "Trivia Tuesday." Our goal is to give you some obscure information that you may or may not know about AFI, from the early days on Wingnut to 2009. If you have any trivia you'd like to submit, send us an e-mail with some form of proof that your fact is true.

This week's trivia regards Very Proud of Ya:
  • Very Proud Of Ya is the AFI album with the most songs, with a total of 20 songs on the regular release. (vinyl-only and No Dave Party are apart)
  • The cover for the album was designed by AFI's then-bassist, Geoff Kresge. Pablo asked Geoff about the cover and he said it matched the album theme song (Consult My Lover).
  • This is the first album where Jade Puget does backing vocals. He's credited as Jade "The Playah" Puget.
  • According to the Nitro Box Set, Adam came up with the name. They really regret naming the album Very Proud of Ya.
  • This album is AFI's album with the most re-recordings. Advances in Modern Technology, Theory of Revolution, Aspirin Free, Crop Tub, Two Of A Kind, Yürf Rendenmein, Cruise Control, Who Said You Could Touch Me, Rolling Balls and Love is A Many Splendored Thing were already featured in previous AFI's releases. This happened because they had little studio time and couldn't finish new songs.
  • Cruise Control and Love is a Many Splendored Thing were featured in a movie called Mary Jane Is Not A Virgin Anymore. Davey had small dialogs on it and they can be seen here.
  • This is AFI's first CD release on Nitro Records.
  • "No Dave Party" the pre-gap hidden track on Very Proud of Ya, was intended to feature vocal recordings from Adam, Mark, and Geoff. Due to time constraints, only instrumental tracks were recorded. Paul Marchand recorded "extra guitar" for the track.
  • He Who Laughs Last was AFI's first single.
  • File 13 means trash. In an office, when the boss asks the employee to put the document under file 13, it means he must put it in the trash. Hence the line "Feel like garbage can"
  • AFI would dedicate Advances In Modern Technology to Smith, Mike and Fritch during the Black Sails and The Art Of Drowning live shows.
  • 1995's Fly in The Ointment featured early versions of Crop Tub, Theory of Revolution and Cruise Control.
  • Crop Tub and Darling, I Want To Destroy You are the only AFI songs where Davey uses a vocoder. A vocoder is used to distort vocals.
  • This album takes its name from a chorus line on the album theme song, Consult My Lover, "I'm so proud of you, so proud of you, I'm proud, I'm very proud of you"
  • Two of a Kind and Yürf Rendenmein are different from the Answer That versions.
  • Yürf Rendenmein is a word-play, as it means "Your friend and mine"
  • Cruise Control was oftenly described as AFI's love song, during live shows.
  • This album was the third release that Love Is A Many Splendored Thing appeared on, and the first time it was properly recorded in a studio. The first release was on 1993's Eddie Picnic's All Wet 7" (live), and the second one was on This Is Berkeley, Not West Bay.
  • Who Said You Could Touch Me and Rolling Balls were previously released on 1993's Behind The Times 7"
  • Several guitar solos on the record were left unrecorded to allow for vocal recording
This article was created by Pablo and Jason with info taken from Key Lime Pie Records' MySpace.

Pictures From AP Magazine's AFI Issue

Thanks to Theresa, we now have some nice scans of pictures from Alternative Press magazine's issue on AFI (they have the December cover: click here for more info).

Alt Press contacted us a few days ago and requested that we not post scans, so we will just link you to the pertinent OMB posts here and here.

Update: We've found another post with a scan here.

MTV Posts Ulalume Show Review

MTV.com has a lengthy review of last night's Ulalume Festival, which will be broadcast next Friday night on MTV. About AFI's performance they said the following:
"Songs like "Death of Seasons" and "Beautiful Thieves" were swelled to massive proportions, the former ending with Havok — dressed in skintight black T-shirt and silver pants, hair swept back in dramatic pompadour — collapsed atop a row of speakers, the latter wrapping with him striding out into the audience, held aloft by their outstreched arms."

Weekend Discussion: Davey's STS or DU Look?

We're going to try out a new weekly feature here, to add a bit of general AFI discussion to our mix of posts. Every Friday or Saturday we'll post a question regarding the band (e.g. "AOD vs. BSITS" or "better live era: STS or AOD?") You can suggest a question by e-mailing us. Here's the first one, from Pablo:

Mary and I were having a conversation about what look was the best for Davey. One of us said the Decemberunderground look was the best and the other of us said it was the Sing The Sorrow look. Vote in the poll on the left, and tell us your thoughts in the comments. Keep the discussion intelligent and no fangirl/boying.

TheDeadBolt.com Explores Crash Love with Jade

TheDeadBolt.com posted an interview with Jade where he talks about "Medicate", "Darling I Want To Destroy You", and the constant change in sound.

Regarding Medicate, Jade said:

"I think a lot of the lyrics, and especially that song in particular, has to do with people that set themselves up in these destructive relationships with other people, purposely set themselves up in these situations so that the things that they love can be taken away. That's to sort of paraphrase Davey throughout the lyrics. But I think a lot of the lyrics touch on themes of isolation because there are themes that run through other songs on the record about this kind of pop-culture crash that we're experiencing as far as culture crash, which is where the title comes from, where everything is sort of being degraded, whether it be art or literature or music. So, for Davey and all of us, we feel isolated from what's really going on in wider culture right now. I think a lot of people do."

View the full interview here.

AFI has posted a video on their website along with a note from Jade.
The note reads:
Thank you, Providence, for your readily accessible Starbucks, chill winds, warm sing-a-longs, brown universities, and vegan pizzeria (which we never get any of!). You may be a mob town, but you can put us in cement galoshes any time. <3
Jade from AFI
The video can be seen here.

What would you ask AFI?

One of our readers, who is a very good friend of mine won a contest and will interview AFI next Sunday on Boston's WFNX on the radio.

The point of this post is that you suggest him what questions he can ask them. He will be interviewing all of them. He will credit whoever gives a good one!

Post your suggestions as a comment here.

Altsounds.com Reviews Crash Love

Altsounds.com has posted a review of Crash Love. The article states:

At first listen, "Crash Love" did little to impress me. Musically, the album doesn’t sound much different than the previous two releases. That’s both bad and good. Good in the sense that they are staying true to their sound and showing a consistent effort and bad in the sense that it gives little reason for “on-the-fence” listeners to be swayed to the true fan side. However, the main difference between "Crash Love" and the aforementioned releases is that it lacks any song that ... forces one to run out and buy the entire album.

(UPDATE) Reuters: 5 AFI Songs on Rock Band In October

Reuters has published an article about AFI's upcoming album Crash Love. Click here to see it. This story is different in that it discusses AFI's market appeal going forward.

The biggest news to come from this is that AFI will be releasing 5 songs for Rock Band in October.

16/10/2009 update: The DLC week for October 20th has been announced as a Queen 10 song track pack. This means that, if Reuters information is correct (which most likely is - they're a reliable source), we will get the AFI 5 song track pack on October 27th. The AFI track would be announced on October 23rd.

Dark Morning Conspirators Mystery Confirmed Hoax

The mystery that in the past weeks has had several board members running around shopping malls for Veronica Saywer and Charles Atlas (see this blog and this thread) has been confirmed as a hoax by Gavin, the administrator of the board.
"Nothing in this thread has been done at the behest of the band, the DF, band management, or the record label."
You may now reclaim your lives. Please exit through the merch shop.

Our Posts Are Now Automatically Tweeted

The AFI News HQ Twitter just got much more beneficial and efficient. We've finally found a good way to automatically publish our headlines (as well as a link) at twitter.com/afinewshq. This removes the lag time between when we publish a post and when we finally get around to posting it to Twitter. Posts will be tweeted within a half hour of publication.

If you aren't already following us (we're on the verge of 500 followers!) make sure you do. It's a great way to keep updated on the go if your mobile phone can access Twitter. We hope to build an iPhone app soon for added functionality on that platform.

Note: the new set-up should take about an hour to process...

Theory posts DF "exclusive" audio (Bowie Cover)

For the first time in many years, the DF gets an audio exclusive. This time, Theory posted a clip of a rehearsal of David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust. DF members can click here to find the thread with the audio. Non-DFers will not be able to access the thread.

The clip was leaked to YouTube.

19:07 PM EST: AFI just posted it on Facebook for everyone to hear. There goes the DF exclusive. We are putting the link here because it was made public for everyone on AFI's Facebook.

MTV Posts More AFI Goodies

MTV has posted more of an interview with AFI. We posted the first part of the interview earlier this week. The writer mentions Davey's love for Pac-Man and working with Jacknife Lee:
"In addition to talking about their awesomely old-school fan club, they also discussed how nervous they were working with producer Jacknife Lee (the band is used to crafting albums bit by bit, and Lee prefers a more "live" sound) as well as the strange band comparisons they've heard over the years (Havok will never forget one of the first reviews ever written about his band, which compared them to the Ramones). "
The video of the interview will be posted soon according to the article. View the article here.

You Know You Want To Read It: Another Crash Love Review

The Telescope has posted a review of Crash Love. They have given it 4 out of 4 stars, stating that:

"Even though they're not that rebellious punk band they used to be in the 90s, AFI still brings powerful lyrics that reflect its feelings no matter what. "Crash Love" is different, there's no doubt about it. This transition made it possible for the band to create one of the best albums of their career."

Here We Go Again: 2 New Crash Love Reviews

Straight.com, a website based in Vancouver, has posted a review of Crash Love. With a headline "The Boys From AFI Can Blame Themselves For An Underwhelming Crash Love" I don't know if you will want to read it.

However, if interested, here is the article. Excerpt:
"Had the band sometimes known as A Fire Inside not raised the bar impossibly high with that 2003 breakthrough, Crash Love wouldn’t seem half the let-down it does. After all, the playing is accomplished enough for the most advanced of Guitar Hero disciples, the songs barbed with some truly killer hooks, and the vibe underground enough for the emover crowd but accessible enough for rock-radio listeners.

What’s missing is the sense of epic grandeur that, six years ago, made AFI look like it was going to be the most important band of the early 21st century. Once you’ve dragged disaffected Gregorian monks, dark-mass orchestras, and black-robed choirs to the midnight-garden party, a good old-fashioned guitar-rock album comes off as a tad anticlimatic. AFI is capable of more than songs that tend to sound like they belong on Now That’s What I Call Emo 2009!. The Ukiah, California–based group doesn’t show that here."
UPDATE: Another review has been found here. This article says that:
"There's no longer any intensity in the songwriting, no arresting quality to singer Davey Havok's voice. The songs completely and shamelessly scream just one thing - 'sell out'"

Another Crash Love Review

The Daily Collegian, a newspaper run by students at Penn State, has released a review of Crash Love. The paper states:

"Havok's lyrical abilities also bog down the band from time to time. He's not one to shy away from the trite or cliché -- "Oh my dear, please dry your eyes," "I feel nothing at all." He also has a tendency to write lyrics that are altogether meaningless -- "The broken radio was playing suicide," "I'd tear out my eyes for you, my dear/ to see everything you do."

Another detracting point with this album is how nearly every song, after developing pretty interesting music during the verses, always pops into a power chord-backed chorus."

Hartford Courant Interview with Jade

The Hartford Courant has published a nice article about AFI's evolving sound through the years, and some new quotes from Jade are sprinkled throughout.

"It was easier for us to blow up on a later album because we had been doing this for a while. It wasn't like we were these new kids that all of a sudden had success that we didn't know how to deal with. We took it very much in stride, and it was great to finally be rewarded after putting in a lot of time."

Band Merch selling Crash Love 12"s with Brand New's record inside

There have been reports of Band Merch (and possibly other sellers) selling sealed copies of the Crash Love vinyl with Brand New's album "Daisy" inside instead of Crash Love.

This is obviously a manufacturing error and not Band Merch's fault, but if you have this problem, you can go and ask for a replacement.

Yet Another Crash Love Review

New University has posted a review of Crash Love on their website. Excerpt:
Rather than falling into the drudgery of straight-up power chord rock, Puget mixes his heavier, chunky riffs in cuts such as “Cold Hands” with more intricate, harmonious fretwork on the Cure-like unadulterated pop charmer that is “Veronica Sawyer Smokes,” where he channels The Smiths’ Johnny Marr with chiming sequences as he lets the high notes ring nice and bright.

RollingStone.com Reviews Minneapolis show

Rollingstone.com posted a review of the first show of the current tour in Minneapolis . With lots of shout outs to The Despair Faction. Read the review here.

Excerpt:
Brandishing his mic stand like a wizard, Havok led his Despair Faction through their sad-but-united sing-alongs, pausing only to proclaim, at various times, that the crowd, the city and being back on tour after a year and a half were all “fucking awesome.” The last, at the very least, seemed to be a heartfelt statement, as the band banged out one expertly rocked song after another with professional efficiency, packing as big a playlist as possible while still ending inside a 10:30 p.m. deadline.

6 To 8 UPDATE!

Davey on the "Medicate" music video

It seems like X96 DJ, Corey O' Brien, had a conversation with Davey about the concept of the "Medicate" music video, which was filmed in late September in the San Fernando Valley area in LA. No release date has been set.

“There’s no plotline, but there are concepts. Conceptually it’s going to be based on a lot of screens being in the studio with us, and we’ll be performing. Some of us will be on screens, some of us will be on different screens, and different symbolic images will appear on different screens, but I’m really looking forward to the visual look of it, which should be very stark and very clean.”

A Night With AFI at The Roxy: Alex's Review

One of our writers, Alex, was lucky enough to get a ticket to AFI's record release show at The Roxy on September 29. He wrote up a nice review:

The atmosphere at the Roxy was incredible. There were no barricades and no security during the show. It felt like we were family, singing ‘woahs’ and ‘heys’ together as one. Stage dives were met with smiles and fan interaction was at an all time high, as Davey walked, somersaulted, and shared the mic.

Opening up with Torch Song took everyone by surprise. Hearing the first echoes of it, the crowd went silent. As the guitar riff was played everyone got over the shock of a new song being played, and Torch Song was met by ‘Anythings’ and ‘Dears.’ I didn’t think Torch Song would serve as an opener but I was completely wrong. It captures the energy and feelings of past AFI opening songs.

(That's less than a third of the review. Click here to read in full!)

After Girl’s not Grey was over, Jade played the starting notes to Beautiful Thieves. My favorite part on this song was definitely the bridge. Davey directing us, everyone in the crowd yelled ‘Woahs’ from the top of their lungs. This is a great song that everyone can participate on.

The performance of Kill Caustic blew my mind. Half way through the song Davey did a graceful somersault into the crowd. Trying to find a way to him, everyone wanted a piece of the action. As Davey was getting pulled back onstage by Smith, he looked back and shook his head, “No”. He stayed up, carried by the crowd for the entire bridge of the song. Simply Amazing.

After Davey’s voice echoed the last, “Oh my beautiful one” of Silver and Cold, he said a few words and the snare started for, Hearts Frozen Solid. Although 30 seconds long, the song packed a punch.

End Transmission was next. Davey jumped offstage and spent a good portion of the song, on a ledge singing to all his friends. This song was beautiful live; I can’t wait for you guys to hear it.

We were treated with Death of Seasons next. This song will never lose its power. Slowing things down, Just Like Heaven was a treat to watch.

The set list consisted of new songs, singles, and rarities. One of these rare songs was ‘Nyquil.’ Davey looked to the back of The Roxy and invited Geoff and Nick 13 to join them for this song. Davey, Geoff, and Nick owned the stage like we were back in 1994. The crowd went nuts, and I loved every minute of it.

Love Like Winter ended and Medicate began. This was an absolute joy to watch. The most exciting part was the bridge, crowd in unison. The song sounded really good live, AFI was right on the money.

6 to 8 was one of the most emotional songs of the night. The band and the crowd were feeding energy towards each other, showing once more, why AFI shows are so special.

Knowing Miss Murder was going to be the final song, the crowd let themselves go. The room exploded with energy. Every single person at The Roxy let their voice be heard.

“Thank you, thank you very much every one. Thank you for joining us. We hope to be back as soon as we possibly can, much Love.”

After AFI left the stage, the lights came back on, and everyone was in a very exciting mood, hugging cheering and talking all throughout the Roxy. The experience turned strangers into friends, and brought friends closer. I will never forget this show, and the experience I shared with others.

AFI is back, and they are better than ever.

RUMOUR: "Dark Morning Conspirators" is a Crash Love Song

According to DF member TheDarkAssailant, "Dark Morning Conspirators" is a title of an unreleased Crash Love B-side. Here is the alleged exchange between he and Davey at the Costa Mesa signing on September 30. We cannot confirm that Davey ever said this, so treat this as a rumor.

TDA: "So Davey, what IS Dark Morning Conspirators?"
Davey: "It's a song. But it's not on the album."
TDA: "Really? Will we ever get to hear it?"
Davey: "I don't know. Probably. I mean, all our stuff usually gets out, right?"
TDA: "That's pretty cool. Mind if I tell the Despair Faction?"
Davey: "Not at all. Go ahead."
TDA: "Thanks."
Davey: "Or if you want, you could just keep it to yourself. You know, not tell anyone. It could be our little secret."

In other news, there is yet another contest to win a signed copy of Crash Love, as well as a signed poster. Click here to enter. The contest is run by Static Multimedia.

Crash Love Review at Antiquiet.com

There is a new review of Crash Love on Antiquiet.com, posted on the 29th. Here is a hightlight:
"The mystery and drama run deep as ever on Crash Love, but what barbs the hooks is that AFI have collectively committed to a vision, and by combining the hormone-surfing emo formula with their hyperkeen awareness of what makes an anthemic jam a massive fucking 25,000 person singalong, the band has meticulously built the framework to hit the strongest note of their career. This isn’t the classic masterpiece it was foretold to be, but it could very well be the predecessor."
Thanks for the tip Haley!!
