Yeah, it premiered in the US at a very weak #12
ReplyDeletei think its on #12 because promotion of this album was so much smaller then Decemberunderground, video came after record was released (i remember Miss Murder video was played premier in Nokia Theatre, but Medicate just came out on internet???) and they didn`t get much time on TV too...i don`t know why they didn`t push this album more...yes,all of fans will run for new record but i bet some people don`t even know AFI have a new CD out
ReplyDeleteDimitrije, maybe they didn't because AFI was already huge. They were big during STS but not huge, so they needed to promote them in order for them to remain in mainstream. That's why they premiered Miss Murder 2 months before DU came out (MM was premiered on KROQ on April 13th), played the MTV Movie Awards on the 4th of June, etc.I'm sure if AFI performed at the VMAs, CL would have gotten more attention.
ReplyDeleteI have requested for times local radio station in Finland to play any Crash Love song, no results. I think that they have played Beautiful Thieves once. But they only play Mainstream music, AFI is too small.
ReplyDelete@thebelexactly, i dont know why old fans say they are maintstream... mainstream is nickelback and bullshit bands like that.
ReplyDeleteTheir place in the US charts really isnt surprising since everyone from Madonna to Mariah Carey and to Streisand all came out with cds on the same day.
ReplyDelete@DimitrijeI agree they didn't really promote it but i bet their label was probably already pissed when they fired their first producer thinking it was a waste of money and didn't really want to spend that much on their promotion. Plus how much money do you think was spent by the label for recording nine months in a studio.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the label was mad at AFI for firing their producer, thus screwing up all the promotion. I doubt they'd try to shoot a band - whom has made plenty of money for them with two platinum albums back to back - in the foot. Money spent in the studio for a band such as AFI was probably thought to have been money worth spending. They like money - they want Crash Love to be a big success. Time will tell if this record has endurance, but I see this album hitting Gold tops. On a side note, it's interesting to point out that Interscope is taking the exact same marketing approach with the new Weezer record. I'm thinking it's just their new approach to marketing more alternative rock bands? If I recall correctly, Brand New's Daisy didnt get much marketing push either.
ReplyDeleteIf Interscope had X ammount of money to spend, they will NOT spend most of it on production. They do not care if the music is any good, they just wanna sell. They'll spend money on marketing... they can make a bad album (decemberunderground) be successful by intensively promoting it.
ReplyDeletewell what ever the reason is for Crash Love not to be promoted i`m still sad about it,i think AFI work hard on this record and they should get more attention and better promotion,i hope this album will reach a lot of new fans but i don`t believe they will even have a chance to hear it
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely unfortunate to see a near 75% dropoff in first week sales in comparison to Decemberunderground. With a slew of big releases like Paramore, Breaking Benjamin, and Alice in Chains, that competition definitely played a part I'd say. But like others have mentioned, not as much pre-release promotion this time around it seems. There's probably also a spillover effect as Decemberunderground's sales were probably boosted in part by Sing the Sorrow's popularity and perhaps the same has happened here as it seems most people weren't really into Decemberunderground as much and might have been turned off and unwilling to buy Crash Love. Hopefully the sales gradually build up, but as Kevin mentioned, the album will probably hit gold status at best especially when starting from 52K in first week sales.
ReplyDeleteNot to mention the different covers of DU.Everyone went nuts trying to get all 4 covers. I am more than sure that contributed to DU coming out number 1.
