"The Missing Frame" Instrumental Track

So here's the instrumental track for The Missing Frame. It's courtesy from Tomas Urlich. This is an AFI News HQ exclusive so please do not post it anywhere else.

You can download it by right clicking HERE and clicking Save Media As. If that method does not work, you can download it from Mediafire here (thanks to Mike for uploading!).

Jason's note: We meant to upload the vocal track, but accidently uploaded the instrumental. We'll post the vocals later.

Davey and Adam Take Over 98 Rock in Baltimore

While AFI was at MTV's Ulalume festival in October, they stopped by 98 Rock radio station in Baltimore, MD. For almost fifty minutes, they played some of their favorite music. You can click here to hear the entire show.

Thanks to sistinas on the OMB for finding this! Here's the playlist according to Brian, one of our readers:

Death in June - The Calling
Adam and the Ants - Stand and Deliver
Fever Ray - If I Had a Heart
Dead Boys - All This and More
Silversun Pickups - Panic Switch
Darker My Love - Blue Day
Deerhunter - Never Stops
Parts & Labor- Nowheres Nigh
Pavement - Cut Your Hair
Pixies - Wave of Mutilation
Psychedelic Furs - Love My Way
The Police - Synchronicity II

Despair Faction Chapter Forums To Change

Gavin, the Despair Faction administrator, posted earlier today on the message board saying:
We will soon be upgrading the software that powers the Despair Faction site. Lots of cool stuff ahead.

As part of this, we'll be moving from the current Chapter forum style to a more direct style where the Chapter pages nave threads directly on them. We want to preserve the thousands of exisiting Chapter posts, so we have moved those to the 10th Circle and have closed the existing Chapter forums.

Until the new system comes in, you can find all your old Chapter threads in the 10th Circle, still open and accepting posts (from anyone now). Your Chapter pages also still welcome your posts: http://www.despairfaction.com/group.php
Please remember that if you are not a Despair Faction member, you will not be able to access these threads.

Beautiful Thieves vocal track for download!

Here's the official release for the vocal track for Beautiful Thieves. I myself really enjoyed it because you get to hear extra instruments that fade out with the guitars, bass and drums. Courtesy of Tomas Urlich, please do not post them anywhere else!

You can download it by right clicking HERE and clicking Save Media As. What should I post tomorrow? Vocal track or instrumental for The Missing Frame?

Prices Drop for Crash Love Lithograph Bundles

Just in time for holiday shopping, the prices of four premium Crash Love bundles in the official AFI merch store have been lowered by $12 each. These include the "Deluxe CD Premium Men's Bundle," the "Deluxe CD Premium Women's Bundle," (prices lowered from $79.95 to $67.95) the "Deluxe Vinyl Premium Men's Bundle," and "Deluxe Vinyl Premium Women's Bundle" (prices lowered from $74.95 to $62.95).

The bundles each contain a CD/vinyl, a shirt, and a set of 12 hand-drawn lithographs from artist Camille Rose Garcia.

Beautiful Thieves Promo Single on eBay

What claims to be DJ promo copy of the Beautiful Thieves single is now on eBay. The bidding started at $5.99. The seller is reputable, garnering a 99.8% satisfaction rating since 2005. Click here to see the eBay listing.

If this copy is legitimate, then Beautiful Thieves will be the next single and should start getting significant airtime. Earlier this month, Tunelab.com reported that Beautiful Thieves would be the next single from Crash Love.

Weekend Discussion: What Opening Bands Would You Want To See?

There has been some harsh criticism of the opening bands on the Crash Love Tour. With Gallows cancelling due to illness and Ceremony replacing them for many dates, many have said both bands are too hardcore. So, this week's Weekend Discussion focuses on what bands you would want to see open for AFI on the Crash Love tour and why.

Also, be sure to vote in our poll on whether you like Gallows or Ceremony opening. We can't wait to see your choices.

Trivia Tuesday: Sing The Sorrow

Today's Trivia Tuesday is based on AFI's CD, Sing The Sorrow, which catapulted their career.

1. The album reached #5 on the Billboard Chart and went Platinum in December 2004.

2. It was ranked number 77 on the October 2006 issue of Guitar World magazine’s “List of the 100 Greatest Guitar Albums of All Time.” Sing The Sorrow was certified "Gold" by the RIAA(Recording Industry Association of America) on April, 30 2003.

3. Sing The Sorrow was the first album to have 3 different album covers Silver, Red and Black (The Black cover had a ocean horizon with no ship reference to Black Sails in The Sunset). The black cover is limited to 2,500 copies and it was originally sold on AFI's US tour.

4. AFI released a "Making The Record" video series for Sing the Sorrow which can be viewed on YouTube. Two of them were DF-exclusive: Backing vocals and Making of Clandestine.

5. Some album artwork contain a picture of a foraminifer, others a dead bird, and most an inverted octopus. All pictures are taken from the book Animals by Jim Harter.

6. There are demos for 6 of the songs in this album: "This Celluloid Dream", "The Great Disappointment", "Paper Airplanes", "...But Home Is Nowhere", "Synesthesia" and "The Leaving Song".

7. "Carcinogen Crush" was written during the Sing The Sorrow session but rerecorded in the Decemberunderground sessions. They did not use the original writings. It was re-worked on.

8. The United States version of "...But Home is Nowhere" is 15:07 minutes long but 3:52 minutes for the UK version.

9. The last page of the Album booklet shows a rabbit picture with the phrase "Rabbits Are Roadkill" eluding to the song "Rabbits Are Roadkill On Route 37", which was released on October 2005.

10. Sing The Sorrow is the first album to include sung lyrics in a foreign language (Spanish)

11. The Leaving Song Pt. II features Spanish lyrics before the chorus. The first one is: "Yo he estado aquí, muchas veces antes, y regreso", which means "I've been here, many times before, and I start." Before the second chorus, it says "Y regreso, aquí otra vez, y comienzo", which means "I come back, here again, and start".

12. In one of the making of STS videos (I think bass tracking), The Leaving Song Pt. II with English verses instead of Spanish verses can be heard in the background.

13. The only two STS songs that remain unplayed live are Paper Airplanes and The Great Disappointment.

14. "The Spoken Word" is NOT the official title for the poem. It's a fan name.

15. In case you hadn't noticed, Girl's Not Grey has a reference to AFI's previous album, "The Art of Drowning". The line says "Swim in the calm tonight, this art does drown"

16. STS leaked in late 2002 with unmastered versions of some songs.

17. STS has an advance record with "unmastered" versios of Bleed Black and This Celluloid Dream. The only difference on Bleed Black is that there's no "breath intro".

18. During the vocal tracking video, Davey is singing the chorus of Rabbits are Roadkill. Obviously, no one knew what he was singing, until RRR37 was released two years later.

19. It's the first album since Very Proud of Ya to feature former bassist Geoff Kresge, who did backing vocals on Paper Airplanes along with band mate Nick 13.

20. But Home is Nowhere was played live twice during the STS era. This Celluloid Dream was played less than 20 times, mostly on July and August 2003 and early 2004. The Leaving Song was played once during a TV show (Musique Plus) and was played at a headlining show for the first time in 2007.

21. AFI did an acoustic show in Atlanta for 99x which featured Silver and Cold (released on the comp), The Leaving Song and Dancing Through Sunday.

22. Davey and Jade started a competition during 2001 to see who could grow the hair longer. You know who won.

23. Davey allegedly had surgery on his throat in 2004. It most be noted that in 2004 no news reports or official word said he got surgery. They always talked about voice rest. However, Davey now says he did get surgery. Make your own conclusions.

24. The last time Miseria Cantare was played live was in Mexico City on April 20th 2007.

25. Some live covers from the STS era include Weezer's "My Name is Jonas" (Australia 2003), Poison's "Nothin' But a Good Time" (Germany 2003), and Jane's Addiction's "Mountain Song" (forget where, 2003)

During the show, the crowd got to choose between Nyquil and a cover of the Descendants' song "Bikeage." Nyquil was chosen, to the dismay of the band (read update). Darling I Want To Destroy You was soundchecked.

Update: According to one reader who was at the show "Davey was very frustrated by the fans reaction to them doing a cover song. He said 'well thanks, I guess, that's disappointing.' Then he looked over at Jade and said 'We're flattered, just disappointed.'"

AFI at the Verizon Wireless Theater Review

Houston Press has posted a review of the performance of AFI at the Verizon Wireless Theater along with some HQ live shots:
Aftermath isn't one so much for biblical allegories generally, but damn if AFI's Davey Havok didn't remind us of Samson on Saturday night at Verizon Wireless Theater. He proved to us exactly what happens when you sacrifice your locks and your pores to the fashion gods.

Adam Now Has A Twitter Account (We Think)

Rumors are swirling about whether this Twitter account is really Adam Carson's. We can now confirm with 99% certainty that it is indeed Adam. There are three people officially connected to the band who are following him: Hunter, Fritch (merch guy), and Mike Fasano (AFI's drum tech since Shut Your Mouth era).

Fritch has talked to Adam through Twitter. Fritch's account is confirmed legitimate based on Hunter's tweet to him. Adam joins Hunter and Jade, who are already on Twitter (@tranquilmammoth and @jadepuget). His latest tweet: "Houston, TX. Downtown is dead. Looks like a bus day for me."

Backstage With AFI

A 2 part video from the YouTube channel Internet Killed Television has surfaced with Charles Trippy going backstage at the AFI concert in Orlando. Thanks to Alex for leading us to this video.

Gavin, the Despair Faction and OMB administrator, made the following announcement tonight at 11:00 p.m. EST:
"We are closed to new registrations for the time being. We'll get it back open ASAP. Everyone can still sign up for the site and such, but you cannot upgrade/pay for the DF right now."

Gallows Myspace Update Regarding Dropping Tour

Gallows recently posted this on thier Myspace:
"We're sorry to announce that we have had to cancel our remaining dates on the AFI tour due to illness. We're sorry to disappoint anyone who bought tickets to see us but make sure you go to the show as AFI are an amazing band and we're so lucky to have spent the last few weeks touring with them. We'll be back in the States soon!""

Jonny Craig Will Play Houston and Austin Shows

Thanks to Fortunefox on the OMB, we have learned that Jonny Craig, the frontman of Emarosa, will open for AFI at the Houston and Austin, Texas shows.

Trivia Tuesday: The Early Days

We decided to go back in time for this week's Trivia Tuesday and gve you facts from long ago.

1. Audio for AFI's set at the record release show for "This Is Berkeley Not West Bay" exists from a soundboard recording made at this show. The soundboard recording remains unreleased. Video footage of AFI's set from this show also exists and circulates among collectors.

2. Audio for "Eddie Picnic's All Wet" was taken from the soundboard recording made at this show. The soundboard recording features the entire performance, but remains unreleased. Video footage of this show also exists.

3. All previous accounts of "Dork" list 6 copies. This is incorrect and the whereabouts of all copies is known at this time with the exception of the single copy that was given to Loose Change at the time that they were received from the pressing plant.

4. Fly In The Ointment features guest vocals by Matt Wedgley on the song "Open Your Eyes", a song originally recorded by Matt's band The Circus Tents. Fly In The Ointment was released on Matt's label Wedge Records.

5. The sleeve for Bombing The Bay was designed by Vinny Wintermeyer, who had also executed the layout for the revised Wingnut version of Anwser That And Stay Fashionable, the design and layout for Very Proud Of Ya, and also the Punk Fiction compilation.

6. AFI played their first live show in Lakeport, CA.

7. AFI's first bassist was Victor Chalker. His real name is Victor Kenyon.

8. Victor's only song he wrote was NyQuil hence why Adam says "Thanks Vic" after they play it on Eddie Picnic's.

9. AFI recorded but never released a song called "Stupidest" and alternate version of Self-Pity during the recording of "Behind the Times"

10. There was an alternate version of Cereal Wars recorded for the "Dork ep"

11. The sleeve for "Eddie Picnic's all wet" was suppose to be an 8 page booklet but it was too time consuming to make it because they would of had to do it buy hand.

12. There was a session for "This is Berkley not West Bay" in which 3 songs that appear on "Answer That" remain unreleased with different lyrics.

13. There are several guitar solos that were not recorded for "Very Proud Of Ya" so the songs in essence are not complete. "No Dave Party" was suppose to have singing in it from the rest of the band except davey hence the title. Also there are several songs that were suppose to be recorded also during this session but because AFI didn't have time in the studio they were never able to finish them. So those songs got released on various compilations instead. So "Very Proud of Ya" didn't turn out how AFI envisioned.

14. Finally there are numerous live, studio, demo outtakes and recordings from a lot of these records and some of the recordings are even older than "Dork" from around 1992.

Following Gallows dropping off of the Crash Love tour, Dave Hause of the The Loved Ones will be opening for AFI on their next two tour dates at House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, SC (Nov. 15) and at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA (Nov. 16). Here's the blog post from Dave's MySpace.
"So I got a call today from my old friend in AFI saying that the band they had opening for them on their current tour cancelled. They asked if I could open for them in Myrtle Beach and Atlanta tomorrow and Monday, too which I said of course. So if you live in those towns and want to come out, see you at the shows."

CONFIRMED: Gallows Leaving AFI Tour

According to sharkbait on the OMB, Gallows has dropped off the AFI Crash Love Tour. There are five more dates on the tour for which Gallows is supporting AFI. The message board post read:
"I'm sad to say that when I saw Gallows healine in DC tonight, Frank said they've taken a beating on this tour an will be flying home tomorrow. So DC was their last show and NY was their last show with AFI."
Updates:

10:48 p.m. - According to Gallows guitarist Laurent Barnard's Twitter page, he has been feeling very sick on the tour lately. Recent tweets include "I'm not feeling too hot today" and "NYC tonight and my body is in a complete state of disrepair" and "Show was fun. I feel like slowly dying right now tho" and "It feels like my brain is trying to escape through my eyes." Apparently, lead singer Frank Carter also threw up after the New York City show.

11:56 p.m. - Aaine on the OMB said she talked to Lee, the drummer, who said they were flying home. She also mentioned Frank laying on the stage, half passed out.

11:00 a.m. - Dave Hause will be opening for AFI on their next two tour dates in Myrtle Beach, SC and Atlanta, GA instead of Gallows. Click here for more information.

Weekend Discussion: Songs You'd Kill To Hear Live

The setlists so far on the Crash Love tour have been pretty consistent, but a surprising old song is thrown into the mix every few nights. We've heard Triple Zero, No Poetic Device, Nyquil, Self Pity, Morningstar, Half-Empty Bottle, Don't Make Me Ill, and more. It seems as though no era is quite off-limits.

That being said, we want to know which songs YOU would most want to hear when you see AFI this tour. Feel free to make an entire dream setlist if you'd like. What songs can they still pull off well? What songs are best left unplayed?

Click here to download our Crash Love Tour Setlist Compilation Version 1.0! Click here for the Fan Projects page of the AFI Ignite Download Center where you can download updated versions every Saturday.

Trivia Tuesday: Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes

Today's trivia Tuesday is dedicated to AFI's most hardcore album, according to fans.

  • SYMAOYE was released on November 11th, 1997. (Tomorrow's the 12th year anniversary)
  • It was the last full length to feature Mark Stopholese and the first one to not feature bassist Geoff Kresge
  • AFI did not have an official bassist to record this album, so they hired The Force's Hunter Burgan.
  • Hunter was reportedly paid $666 for playing in this album.
  • There are some promotional pictures for SYMAOYE featuring an unknown band member. This is Frank Vicario, a member of Snapcase, who never played a show with them and it's unknown if he recorded anything for the album. Snapcase was going to break up and Frank would join AFI. Snapcase remained together.
  • The album art comes from an old kids magic box.
  • There are many references to the number 3 in this album. There are 4 songs with a reference to number 3 (Three Reasons, Third Season, Three Seconds Notice and Triple Zero), and there are 3 songs between each of them.
  • The Patron Saints and Angels is the working title for The New Patron Saints and Angels. It was changed because the chorus bass was changed without Hunter knowing. Hence "The New...". It's unknown who played the new bass lines on the chorus (Mark most likely).
  • This was the first album to feature an intro as first track.
  • The vinyl version of this record features a cover of The Misfits' "Last Caress". This was the closer of their live shows for most of the SYMAOYE era.
  • As far as we know, the only songs they haven't played live are: pH Low, The New Patron Saints And Angels and Three Seconds Notice.

Review Of St. Louis Show

Consequence of Sound has posted a review of the St. Louis show.
It says:
The band’s vociferous fanbase, however, was not to be deterred, as they sang along with every word and bounced to many of the band’s songs (both new and old). Though older tracks “6 to 8″ and “Ny-Quil” had the crowd in its greatest frenzy, new songs off Crash Love, the band’s recently released LP, brought a good amount of dancing to the stage and crowd (despite being much weaker sounding tracks in the bands deep catalog). The four-piece’s songs have begun to sound less like dark dreary sorrow and more like the kind of love you’re not supposed to make music about.

Details on Blaqk Audio's "Bright Black Heaven"

From our sister site, Blaqk News:

Thanks to 'AFI Latino' for the heads up. Billboard put out a recent article regarding Blaqk Audio, spilling some new tidbits of information.
  • Jade commented that "if all of a sudden we're doing two Blaqk Audio records in a row people will think AFI is not happening or something", in regards to the new record actually being finished before Crash Love.
  • Michael Patterson mixed the record.
  • Jade has already written another 70 songs for the group, so the final album might undergo changes before release.

No DF Line for New York Show

Gavin just posted an announcement on the AFI Message Board saying:
There will not be a DF-only line perk for the NYC show next week due to time and space constraints. We hope to work up an alternate perk but the line will definitely not exist. If you want to be at the front, you'll need to show up early as with any other show.

Other shows will continue to have this perk, although we will be changing the method of entry soon, so check this space before your show!

Hunter Interviewed on LiveDaily

Mike found an interview on LiveDaily.com with Hunter. They talked about going on tour, a little bit behind the album title and writing the album, and a bit about the BT winners.
A highlight:
"I think that's the challenge we face each time we set out to record," Burgan said. "We're so used to doing things a certain way and so we're just challenging ourselves to push the boundaries and do something that sounds new; we'll always be making fresh music. But I think that's our biggest challenge. Certainly, that's something I've learned from this whole process is that it's not always the easiest thing."

AFI Interview On Shockhound

AFI posted a exclusive video from Shockhound.com on their MySpace today. In it they talk about their small town roots, differences in writing styles between Blaqk Audio and AFI, and the "natural thread" that runs through all of AFI's music.

Some highlights of the text part of the interview were:
  • "'Darling I Want To Destroy You' was similar that way, except it was a jam, and that’s never happened before with AFI. Those guys started jamming and the song became a front-to-back thing in rehearsal. Then I took the tape home and wrote the melody just off the music, which is more Blaqk Audio-esque in its creation." -Davey
  • "We didn’t scrap anything [when we switched producers], and we didn’t write any new stuff with the new producers. We simply re-recorded it. It was always more of a sonic issue than it was a songwriting issue. We had an idea of how we wanted the record to sound, and we just weren’t getting there on the first attempt. So it really wasn’t as dramatic as it sounds." -Adam

Trivia Tuesday: From Decemberunderground

Here is the third installment in our new weekly series Trivia Tuesday. Last week we tackled Very Proud of Ya, and now it's time for Decemberunderground. If you have any other bits of Decemberunderground-related trivia, leave a comment or e-mail us and we'll post it with credit (be sure to provide a reputable source as well).
  • During the recording of the album, Davey was punched in the mouth by sound engineer Joe McGrath after failing to correctly sing a vocal part during 110 takes.
  • There are 37 claps in the bridge of Love Like Winter.
  • The song "Affliction" ends at approximately 3:37.
  • The voices on the hidden track "...And Then I'll Be Home" are from an album of vocal samples found here.
  • The dial tones during the bridge of "Summer Shudder" spell out the word thispis, which is the Greek word for affliction.
  • The first known lyrics from Decemberunderground were from the end of "The Interview."
  • The first known song title from Decemberunderground was "Kill Caustic" in 2004.
  • Decemberunderground was released on 6/6/06.
  • Rewinding the CD into minus time (before 0:00) will play a 20-second hidden intro to the album. This intro is just more ringing and can be heard at the beginning of the I Heard A Voice DVD (Credit: beneaththeinkk).

TheVine.com Interviews Adam

TheVine.com posted a lengthy interview with Adam. Here some of the highlights, but you should read the whole interview:
  • About Too Shy To Scream: "That was a fun one. We have a couple of different mixes of that and some sound like fuckin’ Stomp or the Blue Man Group or something. I kinda had to leave the room when it was being mixed because I wanted to hear more and more of the drums."
  • "The first time you get in a rehearsal spot and create new music, it’s always inspiring. I think we’re just remembering how awesome it is to just play together, the four of us."
  • "There was one song which had these call-and-response shouts that just about anybody could do. I think the kids were surprised. After a handful of takes, when the novelty wore off, they were looking at each other thinking ‘How long do we have to do this?’"

Blaqk Audio and Hunter Revenge News

I was reading through my December issue of Alternative Press and there is a side article about AFI side projects. There was some new information about Hunter and Hunter Revenge. Highlights about Blaqk Audio:
-They will wait till after Crash Love touring to release the next Blaqk Audio album

-They have recorded 18 new Blaqk Audio songs, but there will be 12 songs on the actual album
