AFI's night on radio (Live post)

X96 radio - AFI stopped by the studios of X96 radio on Monday night and talked to DJ Corey O'Brien. CLICK HERE to download a recording of the show! Here is the news:
  • They will be filming the video for Beautiful Thieves next week
  • Playlist: Beautiful Thieves, Veronica Sawyer Smokes
  • Mike has uploaded the X96 interview to our new YouTube channel.
Rockline - AFI made an appearance on the nationally-syndicated show. The show is still going on, so stay tuned for updates! CLICK HERE to download the interview!
  • Darling, I Want To Destroy You and Sacrilege are the only two songs from Crash Love that haven't been played live yet.
  • Dark Morning Conspirators is not complete; it is missing vocals
  • Ether was written for Decemberunderground and recorded after Decemberunderground was finished. There is one song from Decemberunderground and one song from Crash Love. The leftover song from Decemberunderground is Davey and Jade's personal favorite.
  • Bright Black Heaven will sound "very much like the first one," but they will "explore some new territory" and it will be "very danceable."
  • Dark Morning Conspirators has a part which Jade considers his favorite from Crash Love. The band likes The View From Here even more than Dark Morning Conspirators.
  • When they switched producers from Dave Bottrill to Joe McGrath, they scrapped all of their recorded material.
  • They have started rehearsing Fainting Spells for a live show. They could play Too Late For Gods at this point on tour.
  • Davey: "Inspiration for 'It Was Mine' was the personal conclusion that I reach if what I'm speaking of on the album is not recognized." (paraphrase)
  • Davey doesn't enjoy screaming anymore. He again mentioned the surgery he had in 2004.
  • Playlist: Beautiful Thieves, Torch Song, Medicate, Too Shy To Scream, Love Like Winter, Miss Murder, End Transmission, Cold Hands, The Days of the Phoenix, Sacrilege, Girl's Not Grey, Veronica Sawyer Smokes, The Killing Lights, It Was Mine, OK I Feel Better Now, Silver & Cold
Our very own Mike (resident audio/video ripper) made an appearance on the show as a caller!

Update: The interview on Rockline is up for streaming on their website. Click HERE to listen to the replay

  12. @Flash: don't forget Death of Seasons and Miss Murder :PFainting spells live would be amazing!!! I doubt Jade would switch from acoustic to electric multiple times though. This just makes me want to here The View From Here even more!!!

  13. I would guess they'll play it 100% electric just using a pedal to kill any distortion/echo during the normally acoustic parts.

  17. Did Davey say why he doesn't enjoy screaming anymore? Is it because he's scared he'll fuck up his vocal chords again, or he just has lost all interest in shouting/screaming?I think AFI still does those screamy songs in a live setting because the fans want them. No matter how far away they depart from their aggressive roots on albums, when it comes to a live show Davey knows he needs to bite the bullet and please the fans who want that aggression I guess. It's a real shame he feels this way, I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd love to see something like No Poetic Device done on this tour with a bit more emotion behind the song. Also, there are four members of AFI, not just Davey. Perhaps everyone else likes playing a fast, aggressive song occasionally. While intricate songs are great for showcasing talent it's no secret that pumping out power chords at godly speeds is a lot of fun, and if Davey were to stop them doing those songs it'd be a bit selfish. Can't fucking wait for Fainting Spells, please take it to Australia, thanks.

  20. Can't really agree with you Jamekae that Davey is selfish to want to cut down those types of songs. Adam, Jade, and Hunter don't risk having their hands fall off by doing them. Davey risks losing his voice. If any band member feels they can't do a particular song (well), they should have the right to veto it without being classed as selfish. Just because it's a whole group of songs that Davey doesn't feel he can to do (well) doesn't make it so selfish...

  21. A few songs a night isn't overly hazardous now that Davey has learnt the correct way to scream with causing minimal damage in comparison to the way he was using his voice in the nineties. Also, songs like The Prayer Position have been dropped for the sake of Davey's voice, but to have a set with no screaming whatsoever may prove less enjoyable to Adam, Hunter, Jade and the fans. You may think that something like Kill Caustic kills the shit out of Davey's voice but as I said above, correct screaming (which Davey's been to vocal coaches to learn) can cause minimal to no more damage than straining to hit a high note can cause.

  22. You're also presuming Hunter, Adam, and Jade REALLY want to play those songs. If they're indifferent, then Davey preferring not to is of no consequence. In addition, while obviously the point of the shows is to play music that fans will enjoy, the fact that Davey wrote screaming lyrics in the past doesn't obligate him to sing them any more. If he simply doesn't enjoy it, I feel like it's far more selfish for everybody else to demand him to do it. Ultimately, that's where Hunter, Adam, Jade and the fans should just be cool about it, just as they should if there's songs or styles that any of the rest of them don't want to do. I feel like it's far more selfish to ask somebody to do something they don't like doing for your own sake than it is to ask for somebody else to understand that you don't like and don't want to do something.
