8/3/10 Camden, NJ - Setlist and Pics

AFI was the opening act for Green Day last night on the first show of their August North American tour together. According to kristen2001 on the OMB, this was the setlist:

Medicate
Girl's Not Grey
Leaving Song Pt. II
I Am Trying Very Hard to be Here
The Missing Frame
End Transmission
Beautiful Thieves
Dancing Through Sunday
Miss Murder
Silver and Cold
Love Like Winter

Make Major Moves has posted a gallery of excellent photos of AFI performing. We've also found a Flickr gallery here. Green Day's 32-song killer setlist can be found here.

  2. I think touring with green day will bring on a much larger fan base therefore more money will be used for the next album and supporting it... tht i'm glad about

  4. that setlist was kind of (really) predictable...
but i'm still pumped! and it's not 'their' show so it makes sense, i agree with matty. :)

  5. I'm loving the length/song choice on the Green Day setlist. So excited for August 9!

  6. I guess I'm not really bummed about there being no date here for AFI, though that Green Day setlist looks like a lot of fun...

  7. oh sweet balls 32 songs is a lot...

  8. I'm not really surprised. This is Green Day's headlining tour, after all. I'm just going to be happy to see AFI one last time before they stop touring until next album :3

  10. AFI doesn't really have a choice in having to be predictable here. They're not headlining anymore. I still think for an opening act, though, they did a fucking phenomenal job. All of the songs were very upbeat and fun (though I was really disappointed at how some people reacted to AFI).

I'm just happy that they're getting a chance like this, to perform to a whole new audience and possibly make more fans.

  11. According to my email alerts, you haven't commented on this post yet, Pablo. :/

  12. @Shelly

It's more that they DIDN'T react. Everyone just stood there and didn't even attempt to listen or have a good time. And some were mocking the band, too.

  13. ^When I say that, I mean in MY area. Apparently, people were pretty cool in the pit area. I was back in the lawn.

  14. How about something pre-Sing the Sorrow? Huge AFI fan here and I thought this setlist was weak. At least give me some Art of Drowning.

  15. AFI will not play pre-STS songs regularly this month. They realize their audience is Green Day fans on this tour. Fans who are going to Green Day concerts in 2010 are going for AmIdiot and 21CB. They like mainstream rock music. AFI will play the songs they think will be received well. You don't throw away an incredible opportunity like this by playing niche songs. I love BSITS and AOD, but to play them on this tour would be a mistake of colossal magnitude.

  16. I missed the first two songs. I was so bummed! But they were awesome as always. I have to say though, I was kinda disappointed in Green Day. 32 songs is a lot yes, but their on stage banter/antics were kinda childish and immature.

  17. Are they still doing the fucking "baptism" thing in the middle of East Jesus Nowhere? I found that incredibly rude last time I saw them...

    ReplyDelete
  18. green day are childish, but thats awesome. i hope afi plays some oldies on this tour, you know, show the green day fans where afi came from, but i love green day and afi.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Haha but... AFI barely shows AFI fans where AFI came from :P and I don't see why GD fans would care where the opening band came from :P

And seriously guys, I don't get why some of you are offended/surprised no one cared for AFI... in a GREEN DAY show! :P I've seen many people bashing/mocking Scarlett Gray and the bands that opened for AFI. It's the same for all bands.

  20. I figured their setlist would be this short *sigh*
nonetheless, I'm going to be one of those kids who's mainly just their for AFI, not GD. Difference is, I appreciate the whole concert. I wasn't crazy about Gallows on the Fall 2009 AFI tour, but I didn't make a point to insult anyone. Everyone should try to be like that at shows :D

I hope the august 14th show at PNC is great!
    ok, who's going?

  21. I'm with Pablo. Pretty much 99% of GD fans couldn't care less about where AFI came from. Hell, if you polled all AFI fans who came to the band during STS or later, I'd say well over half of THEM don't care about AFI's first 3 albums. It's just not the type of music the audience would enjoy, so why play it?

  22. ^ thats pretty sad. Opening bands are suppose to pump you up for the main attraction. How is that suppose to happen if you don't give that band a chance. I always check out opening bands I've never heard of or not that sure of before shows. I'll at least give them a chance during the show.
The people in the front played 90 fucking bucks anyway. Why not enjoy yourself? AFI has good music, its pretty obvious.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yes, but nearly everybody at a GD concert would say it's pretty obvious that old AFI **ISN'T** good music. Most present AFI fans would probably agree, even.

    ReplyDelete
  24. and thats even worse. I guess its both AFI and music fans fault. AFI's fault for a "HITs" limited setlist and the ears blocking it out.

Pablo I guess I understand where your coming from but I just can't understand why people can't appreciate bands supporting other band and "its not the case for all bands". I can recall everyone around me having a blast during Rancid and then rocking the fuck out to Rise Against. There is nothing wrong with an eclectic line up. It should be done more often and not just festivals. It gets predictable/boring watching an opening band play the same kind of music as the headlining band.

    ReplyDelete
  25. , i LOVE Afi BSITS and VPOY or SYMAOYE. I think that should an opening band play fast and heart pumping songs to get the fans pumped for green day? i love green day and afi so this tour is amazing.i hope afi plays some AOD or Black sails on this tour.

    ReplyDelete
  26. i kind of disagree with you flash, not all afi fans like the old stuff. but im pretty sure alot of them do, i know tons of people who have BSITS as thier favorite album, ik thats my favorite album.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'd wager pretty much everything I own that the vast majority of AFI fans do not, in general, like pre-BSITS afi. You forget, the people who come here or the omb are not the typical, casual fans. But the extremely large majority of AFI's fans arrived when AFI's sound went mainstream. There is a reason it's called "mainstream." You know what would happen if The Prayer Position were played on mainstream radio? People would change the station, without fail, even if many of the people casually liked LLW, GNG, or MM. You're living in a dream world if you think a many people at a GD concert would appreciate old AFI, when many people at an AFI concert don't even appreciate old AFI. It's not sad to most AFI fans that they don't play old stuff. The vast majority of fans in their shows don't know shit about A Single Second or Brownie Bottom Sunday or anything in between. And most of them don't want to. They just don't like that kind of music. It isn't bad or good...just everybody has her own taste. A person who likes AFI's first 5 albums doesn't have a better ear for music than somebody who doesn't. And vice versa. Different tastes are the way of life. Which leads to jab's 2nd point: you don't know why people can't just rock out to opening bands even if they normally don't care about those bands? You ever tried rocking out to music you can't stand? Yeah...It doesn't work. If you don't like something, good luck getting into it.

  28. Also, sundae* fucking cell phone keypad and typing too fast.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Flash....thank you.

I have to disagree with one point though. While you don't have to "rock out" to music you hate, you can at least have the decency to show some respect for the band. It's their living. Other people like it. Don't hate, especially when you're agreeing to see an opening act with your purchase of that ticket. It's a concert, for crying out loud; you're not their to bitch and moan, you're there to have some fun. So make the best of it.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm not saying that you should try liking something that you hate Flash or get into it for that matter. I do find it odd that the majority of people attending the first date of the tour didn't respond positively to AFI. Maybe it was because of the setlist maybe it was just because they didn't like AFI or their music. If the rest of the dates are like this it'll be a waste of precious fucking time, but I am on the outside looking in so I'll see for myself when the Dallas date rolls around.

and no I've never rocked out to music I can't stand nor do I expect any other person to but there is a difference between not liking something and giving it a chance Flash. Some people avert their fucking ears cause they don't want to hear anything but what their prepared to listen to. Green day and AFI make different music but I think/suppose we can agree (since we are on a AFI fan site) that AFI makes some solid music and so does Green day and solid music deserves some positive feedback and from the majority of what I've been hearing.........no positive feedback.

  31. Agreed, but in conclusion AFI RULES 1991-2010

  32. I'm one of those wierdos who doesn't like pre BTS stuff. It's just not my type of music. I don't mind when they play the songs at shows - because they are full of energy; but I have no patience to listen to the songs by themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yes, we can agree that they both make quality music. But you can't expect people who aren't AFI fans to agree with that. Some will, some won't. There is some art you can tell you don't like at first glance/listen. Maybe that was the case. If they don't care for it off the bat, who are you to criticize their tastes. Example: I don't like death metal. I have no intent of listening to it long enough to even try to let it grow on me. There is, at first listen nothing that intrigues my ear whatsoever. I have been at a concert where I wanted to listen to the main act, and the opener was death metal. I tuned out. Why? Because it didn't appeal to me in the least. Not a bad thing, just a preference. I like the fans at the GD concert spent my money. As the paying customer, so long as I'm not being a nuisance, have no obligations to pay attention to any particular aspect of the show.People go to concerts all the time even when they know they will dislike or even hate the opener. I'm certain pretty much anybody who is a regular concert goer will say they have suffered through at least one ear-offending act. Need I bring up memories of Deadboy and the Elephant Men...?

  34. When Slipknot was in my town I went to see them.Opener was Killswitch Engage.Even tho I don`t like that type of music very much I didn`t judge them right away and they were amazing.KE gave so much energy, they really done their job pretty well and some of my friends later became their fans so i think people should have an open mind when it comes to AFI.Main problem with AFI is that even their hard core fans don`t like some of their stuff/era so it is hard in general to accept AFI of first kick..you need to give them more chance, more listening so they can grow on you and once you realize how good they are there is no coming back :).I`m glad that i gave them a chance and now they are my fav. band of all time :D.People who are mocking AFI are just missing good music, its their lost..AFI never really cared how much fans they have because that is not the main reasons why they are playing music so I think they never had the aim to get more fans on this tour, they are just having some good time with their friends from GD :)

  35. Flash...yes they did do the baptism thing. They also pulled up 3 fans to sing "Brain Stew" which was awful. During another song they had a bunch of people crowd surf up to the stage and dance around. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about bands appreciating their fans, but it just got old after a while. They also had a toilet paper shooter and a t-shirt gun.

  36. @daveyhavokisgod

Wrong song, they did it for "Longview". I think it's nice that a big band like that gives the fans a chance to still participate. (And I do agree, those singers were just horrid)

  37. @daveyhavokisgod

Yeah dude I could've posted the same thing you did. I showed up during Leaving song pt 2 and think that green day started off amazing but then fell off and lost me during the seemingly hour long childs play on stage.

  38. For those interested I recorded "Medicate" in full from my iPhone. Good quality. Gives you an idea of how dead the crowd was... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uU8fUYxkfBA

  39. When AFI was playing it was DEAD & I was in the first section right behind the pit. I honestly never listened to AFI before & went because I'm a Green Day fan, but I gotta tell ya I really liked AFI. Green Day was absolutely mind blowing, & I get GD fans not wanting to be bothered with the opening act, but disrespecting AFI just wasnt cool. I started to feel like an idiot when I realized I was the only one dancing in my area to AFI, but I didnt care, my friend & I had a great time, & I dont think anyone came out of there having not enjoyed themselves, so isn't that all that matters? :)
