AFI to play mtvU’s Ulalume with Paramore

According to Ticketmaster, AFI will be playing mtvU’s “Ulalume”, along with Paramore “and more.” The show will be broadcasted on MTV on October 30.

Ulalume will be held at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD, on October 23th 2009. Tickets will go on sale on September 9th 2009 at 10:00 am. Doors for the event will open at 6:00 pm.

We’ll keep you posted for ticket prices. You can view AFI’s Ulalume page here. Many thanks to Kim Taylor and Mike Cherrios for the tip! :)
Says the press release, “The show, which takes its name from the Edgar Allen Poe poem of the same name, will be sure to celebrate all things spooky and this year’s Halloween. Under a gray autumn sky with withering leaves, the festival grounds will transform into a ghoul haunted woodland featuring a costume contest and more tricks set to unfold throughout the night. Performances straight from “Ulalume” will air during a Halloween-themed week on MTV, MTV.com, mtvU, and mtvU.com, with more details to be announced.”

AFI To Start Filming Video Later This Week

Jade made a blog entry this morning about the European Festival tour, and also revealed some plans for the future. The big news we have learned is that AFI will soon be filming a music video for one of the songs off of Crash Love.
“Going back to the States later this week to make a video.”

Thanks to Oskar, Ian and Nic for the tip!

Gallows NOT Doing Full AFI Tour, Only Sept-Oct (Please read the new Editor’s Note)

According to a press release made by Business Wire, Gallows will not be supprorting AFI for the full US run of the Crash Love Tour. Acorrding to the release, Gallows will be playing with AFI from October 2nd in Minneapolis through October 19th in Richmond, VA. After the 19th, they will embark on a tour with Flogging Molly and Inward Eye in Canada.

You can view the press release here. For a list of the AFI shows at which Gallows will be playing, click here.
Editor’s note: We have now discovered that we misunderstood the earlier press release saying that Gallows will support AFI for a full US tour. Gallows has cancelled their September and early October tour dates in favor of playing with AFI. After mid-October, Gallows will be playing with Flogging Molly through the rest of October.

There is also a Gallows UK tour planned for November and December. It is unclear whether Gallows will tour with AFI in 2010.

We’re very sorry for all of the confusion surrounding this issue, and we’re trying to clear it all up to the best of our ability. If you have any other questions about this, please comment and we will answer them.

Good Housekeeping, Pt. 2

Hello,
Jason here. I want to use this post to both welcome a new writer, and to share a few important notes about the blog.
First, let’s welcome Kera to our growing staff of writers! She is a long-time AFI News HQ reader, around nearly since the dawn of the blog. Her passion and enthusiasm for AFI is hard to beat (as well as her online hours), so we’re very excited to have her as part of our team.
I also want to explain a new situation that has arisen. As some of you know, I am indeed 14 years old, and therefore required by law to attend school. My school year has begun, and I do not get home until early evening. Therefore, in order to have your news tips posted to the blog as soon as possible, please send them to Pablo or Brandon between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. EST on weekdays. You can e-mail them by clicking on their names in the top right corner.
As Crash Love approaches, and the news begins to arrive by the bucketload, we need as many eyes around the Internet as possible. This includes you, the readers. I want to thank all of you who send e-mail to us. Whether it is a news tip, some setlist information, or even a “thank you,” you are all helping in amazing ways. Here we strive to collect AFI news and information from all over the Internet and put it in one place, but we can’t do it without your help. So please, keep sending the tips. You WILL receive credit. And if you don’t, please let us know. It is probably just a mistake.
As a final note, you may have noticed that we recently added “retweet” buttons to each story. The purpose of these is to instantly spread the word about specific AFI news. Tweeting a story is effortless: just click on the green “retweet” button and you will be taken to Twitter, with your status already filled in. Just click “update” and you’re done. By doing this, you are helping spread the information far and wide, as well as spreading the word about the blog. We want as many people as possible to get accurate AFI news and information.
Many thanks,
-Jason

Theory plans on "rounding up a few more (extras) next week"

Today I was talking to theory, AFI’s webmaster about the +++ reveal, on AIM. Since I use Ubuntu and not Windows or MAC, I was using Pidgin as a messenger. I nicknamed him “theory”, because his s/n is (taken down to protect privacy/prevent him from being bothered). When I asked him about if we would get 3 extras in total, he said he was planning on rounding up a few more next week!

Last extra revealed

A couple of hours ago the final extra was revealed. Unlike many people thought, we only received one extra, which is the full length video of the backing vocals of IATVHTBH plus behind the scenes of the meet and greet. We don’t know what theory meant that they’ve been gathering the extras all this time as he always had the video on his computer, as it can be seen on this post.

You can watch the video here. Thanks to Oskar, Angela, Kylee and Patrick for the tip!

Welcome Brandon, our new writer!

Some people suggested we needed a writer living in the west coast so we could cover AFI while the East Coast is asleep. Well, I asked my very good friend Brandon (ANGELSINEVERYONE on the Despair Faction) to help us out, and he agreed!
I’ve known Brandon for almost 4 years now as we both were on another AFI fansite, and he’s a great guy!

"100 Words" and "Fainting Spells" Added to Deluxe Edition

Two songs from the unreleased EP of 2008 have now been added to the Crash Love Deluxe Edition on iTunes. “100 Words” and “Fainting Spells” are the tracks.
Update: for those of you who had already pre-ordered Crash Love before these two tracks were added, know that you WILL be receiving those tracks on September 29, 2009, because the content of pre-orders is subject to change.
After these tracks have been released, “The View From Here” will be only unheard song from the EP, and even that may be released with another version of the album.
Many thanks to DeltaWarrior80 for the tip! This is pretty big news. Comment and tell us what you think…

AFI in September Rock Sound Issue

AFI is featured in the September 2009 issue of Rock Sound, onsale now. The article has several interesting quotes from Davey about Crash Love. Here’s the stuff we didn’t already know:

“This album has been war,” lead singer Davey Havok admitted to Rock Sound, laughing about the time spent in the trenches creating their latest work. “Every time we go to make a record we want to make something new and fresh, we really want to push and move forward from where we were last.”

For ‘Crash Love’ the band wrote somewhere near 70 songs, filtered them, and recorded three quarters of the album with producer David Bottrill (Tool, Placebo, Coheed and Cambria) before realising the songs didn’t sound right.

“It wasn’t exactly what we were looking for,” Havok explained. “We didn’t think we were going to be able to achieve what we wanted, so we moved on, we kept the songs as they were and started recording them again with new people in a new studio.” The band went to producer Joe McGrath (Morrissey, Alkaline Trio, Blink 182) and came out with a record that was, in Havok’s words, “very alive and with very unique tones.”

Lyrically the album is also a departure for the band. “It’s very different to what I historically touch upon,” Havok conceded. “Most of my lyrics in the past have been very retrospective and brooding, songs about my personal feelings at the time. This record is really more of a commentary on the cult of celebrity, looking at how society desires artists to become celebrities. It’s about the desires that create and maintain certain types of celebrity but it’s not nessecarily an indictment.”

–>DOWNLOAD THE INTERVIEW HERE<–

* Davey did indeed have vocal surgery during the Sing the Sorrow tour, contrary to denials in the past from official sources.
* “Medicate” is about “the mutability of elation that’s based in very powerful, fleeting moments… how something very powerful but brief can impact you.”
* Nick 13, Dan Under, Ben Grey, and some “nice ladies” sang backing vocals in the chorus of “Beautiful Thieves.”
* They will not play any songs from Crash Love tomorrow at the Lido show in Berlin.
* “God Called In Sick Today” was written 10 years ago on New Year’s Eve.
* Jacknife Lee produced 4-5 songs.

Songs played: Prelude 12/21, Silver and Cold, Medicate, Miss Murder, God Called In Sick Today, The Despair Factor, 37mm, and This Time Imperfect.

VeronicaSawyer.com Launches, Meet AFI

VeronicaSawer.com, a reference to “Veronica Sawyer Smokes” from Crash Love, has been launched. Veronica Sawyer has a Despair Faction account as well as a Myspace page. You can also follow Veronica on Twitter. The main text of the site says:
Download an exclusive ‘Crash Love’ stencil design, there are A4 and A3 printable options, for you to use on tshirts and wherever else you can think of. Once downloaded, stick onto some card and carefully cut out the white area using a craft knife or scissors. Then spray that paint.

If you’re at Reading festival this Sunday and want to meet AFI then spray the stencil on a Black tshirt and meet at 7pm outside the Radio One Stage at the fence down at front right of stage.

The first 15 people there in sprayed Tshirts get to go back stage and say hi.

Davey Havok just appeared on KROQ to premiere the new single, “Medicate.” Here is what we learned in the interview:

1. Crash Love did not take as long to create as Decemberunderground. AFI wrote for 9 months and then recorded for another 9 months.
2. The general meaning of Medicate is about “really powerful and fleeting experiences.”
3. Crash Love was mostly written in a hotel room in LA. The melodies were constructed and then the lyrics were created.
4. There will be more US tour dates.
5. The 2nd Blaqk Audio record is finished and will be released after Crash Love.
6. There will be special news for AFI fans who listen to KROQ in the next few weeks.

Two Crash Love outtakes to be included on iTunes version

Reportedly, people have received an e-mail containing info about the pre-sale of Crash Love on iTunes. The big news is that two songs whose existence we first announced will be included in the iTunes version.

The songs are Too Late for Gods and Breathing Towers to Heaven, the latter being a demo. Here’s what the e-mail contained:

MEDICATE AND CRASH LOVE PRE-ORDER AVAILABLE ON ITUNES 8/25

“Medicate” will be made available for sale digitally on 8/25 and CRASH LOVE will also be available for pre-order on the same day at iTunes. Fans who pre-order the album from iTunes will immediately receive the track Medicate. The itunes version of CRASH LOVE will also feature bonus tracks “Breathing Towers to Heaven” an unreleased demo, “and Too Late for Gods” an unreleased studio track, both from the CRASH LOVE sessions.

Thanks to Kera for the heads up.

Gallows Will Be Opening For Entire US Tour

According to Under The Radar, a music website based in New Zealand, Gallows are supporting AFI during the entire nationwide Crash Love US Tour. Click here to see the story.
This is new information. Previously, we thought that Gallows would only be touring on the east coast. Now we know they will tour nationwide through AFI’s full US tour.

Press Release:

With their tour on the verge of tickets going on-sale, Gallows have announced that they will be postponing their upcoming New Zealand dates.

The band were offered an unmissable opportunity to build on their already rabid following in the US with a national tour supporting AFI.

Gallows and promoters RW Entertainment apologise for any inconvenience this has caused but promise it will be worth the wait!

“We’re so sorry to our friends in New Zealand for pulling out of this tour and from all the messages we’ve received we know there are a lot of you out there. We’ve been huge AFI fans since the beginning and we don’t want to turn this opportunity down to later regret missing out on the chance to tour with one of our favourite bands. Hopefully this gives you time to learn the lyrics and scream your hearts out with us when we return next year.

AFI News HQ interviews Deb about Crash Love!

A couple of days ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing a long time friend of mine, Deb, who probably is the only AFI fan who has listened to Crash Love in its entirety.

We didn’t want to make a long interview which would lead us to know facts we already knew. Instead, we asked 8 simple but great questions that she answered.

Many, many thanks to Deb for accepting to do this interview! :)

AFI News HQ: Davey says he believes that this album has a similar energy and ethos at its core as Black Sails In The Sunset. Do you feel this too?
Deb: Crash Love is a very energetic cd.. but it’s very different to Black Sails. One noticeable difference is the lack of aggression. I think this is what alienated a lot of people around the Decemberunderground era. It was that aggression and hopelessness that created a community of like minded people. It seemed that Davey had ‘grown up’ and matured.. and with that came a new outlook on, well, everything. Crash Love is a mature record. It’s passionate and emotional, but that’s as close as it comes to Black Sails. I hope that I haven’t looked too far into the question.. I’m just really excited about this new direction.

HQ: Many people were disappointed with DU and still praise STS and older works. What do you think these people will say about CL?
D: I really do think that people will embrace Crash Love, for the reason that I mentioned above. Decemberunderground was a shock to the system. Everything that we’d ever come to love about AFI seemed to change without warning. Three years has passed, and I think that people that were fans pre-DU have either come to terms with the constant progression, or will simply appreciate a rather passionate [and] honest record.

HQ: Some people have theorized that “Sacrilege” is anti-religious. From what you can remember of the lyrics, is this accurate?

D: ‘Sacrilege’ isn’t an anti religion song, per se. After giving this song a REALLY good listen, I understood that Davey was distressed by this blind faith and ‘holier than thou’ attitude that a lot of people love to impose. I could be a little off the mark, but I really appreciate his honesty. It’s so refreshing to hear people speak their mind, and not say what they thing the majority want to hear.

HQ: Are there instances of screaming or harsher vocals?

D: There’s no screaming at all.. and no ‘harsh’ or ‘raspy’ vocals. He does get quite passionate at times which really shows in his voice, but as I mentioned, this isn’t an aggressive album at all. There is simply no need for screaming. The screaming on everything pre STS (and STS included) added another dimension to the music. It helped us better understand the pain, anger and hurt. The screaming felt really forced on DU.. and I think a lot of fans saw right through that. I really like that Crash Love doesn’t have any screaming. It would have been so phoney.

HQ: Are the bridges comparable to those found on STS and AOD?

D: The one thing that I loved about STS was how songs could transform into something special in a split second.. for example, on ‘Bleed Black’ .. the bridge just changes the song, giving it such an epic feeling. There are a few songs on Crash Love that have the same effect. I’ve noticed that a lot of people are a little disappointed with ‘Medicate’, but I have to stress that they can’t make any judgment until they hear the song in full. The bridge just changes the dynamic completely.

HQ: The fastest song on Crash Love is as fast as which song in AFI’s history?

D: I’d say that ‘Sacrilege’ is the fastest song. It would be most simular to ‘Girls Not Grey’ off the top of my head. They’re not a hardcore band anymore, so people shouldn’t expect anything like songs before STS.

HQ: Although it had some rock-ish songs, DU had slow-tempo songs. Would you say CL is a fast album, or a slow album?

D: Crash Love is well balanced. There are some ‘faster’ numbers, and some more mellow tracks.. but even though they are mellow, they seem to have this (I’m trying not to use ‘epic’ so much) grand feeling. Even the slower songs still sound ‘big’. Just like how ‘The Great Disappointment’ seems quite chilled to begin with, it just transforms into a masterpiece. I really think that after a few listens of CL, AFI fans will agree.

HQ: Is there any special song structure like Miss Murder, or do all songs follow the intro-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus-outro structure?

D: All the songs are pretty ‘standard’ in the verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus sense.

This was the whole interview. We got special information out of this:

* Despite its title, Sacrilege is not an anti-religious song.
* There is no screaming or yelling in the album at all.
* The fastest song in the album is Sacrilege
* The bridges during songs are back
* All the songs follow AFI’s typical song structure (intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus, outro)

Once again, many thanks to Deb for this interview!

Possible Crash Love Release Information

DF member Diego has posted the following message on the OMB:

“I’ve just heard Torch song and Medicate and they’re awesome!! They reminded me of Sing The Sorrow. Also i’ve heard (label info) that on september 29th we’ll get a regular jewel case release and maybe a digipak. There will be 4 b-sides, how they will be released is unknown yet, one of them is an outtake from STS (take a guess), another one an outtake from DU, and the other two from CL. Super deluxe edition (maybe vinyl) later in the year. 2-3 more songs on Guitar Hero besides Medicate. BIG release plans to come, which I can’t reveal, but expect AFI everywhere.”

We cannot confirm that this information is true, and it should NOT be taken as fact. Diego claims to have a good friend who works at Universal Music Group, the major label that owns Interscope Records.
Update: Diego has told me the following about his relation to Universal Music Group: “I’ve done projects for Universal, Mexico office, so I have some friends over there.”

Full Review Of Crash Love Now Online

Last week, we saw the review of a 5-track sampler of Crash Love on Bombshell Magazine’s Web site. Now we have found the full track-by-track review, also from Bombshell. The tracklisting in the promo is very different from the one that we have revealed in the Tweet To Reveal campaign (See below).
Click here to see the new full review at BombshellZine.com. There are several new lyrics from Crash Love revealed, and they are outlined below.
OK, I Feel Better Now – “I had felt elation before all sensation died.”
Sacrilege – “…let our faith die.”
It Was Mine – “Don’t speak, don’t say anything. They’ve been recording all we say for years now.”

New AFI Web Site Design In Progress?

A curious new web page has been found on AFireInside.net, linked to from the old I Heard A Voice-themed page. The page seems very incomplete, and most of the navigation links do not work. The header is light blue and white with a small “AFI” in the middle. The background image is the Begin Transmission cracked glass picture.
As of now, no home page has been found, just a Media page. From this page, all of the Begin Transmission winner videos are playable, and a couple of the old tour videos are playable as well.
The navigation links on the page are Home, Bio, Blog, Audio/Video, Photos, Events, Discography, Mobile, Extras, Links, Forum, FAQ, Videoblog, and Twitter. None of the links except for Home, Bio, and Audio/Video work. However, even these working links only lead to AFI pages we have already seen.

"Medicate" on MySpace, Cover Art Revealed

Saturday night, it was discovered that AFI has added “Medicate,” the lead single from Crash Love, to their MySpace page. The song is NOT PLAYABLE, but last night the player said that the song is 4:22 long. You can find it here on MySpace Music. It says that “Medicate” will be released on August 25, the same day it will be available for purchase on iTunes.
Update: To clarify, the player is not available on the front page of AFI’s Myspace. You have to go to this special page to see it: http://music.myspace.com/index.cfm?f…bumid=13354607

The picture that goes along with the player seems to be the artwork for the single. The ghostly picture of the members is taken from a Crash Love image we revealed on Saturday morning. Edit: the pictures aren’t quite the same. The Medicate single picture shows Adam and Jade standing with different poses. (Thanks to mmxzbnl for spotting that)

Alt Press Gets Peek At ‘Crash Love’

In the Up and Autumn AP 2009 Disc Preview, Alternative Press magazine wrote this paragraph about Crash Love. (Note: this only the second half of the review. Click on the above link to see the full article.)

“…for Crash Love, the band dialed down their atmospheric tendencies to concentrate on bringing the rock. From the anthemic “Medicate” to the best song Adam Ant never wrote (“Too Shy To Scream”) to destined-to-be classics (“Beautiful Thieves,” a distant cousin to Sing The Sorrow’s “The Leaving Song Pt. II”), Crash Love is poised to sate their fans and make converts out of the rest.”

Seven New Crash Love Pictures

Seven low quality images have been floating around on the Internet for a couple of days now, and all of them seem to be promotional photos for Crash Love. This has not been confirmed however, so do not assume these are promo pictures. We do not yet know their purpose/use. Click the links below to see them.

AFI In Revolver October 2009: Scans Here!

We have just learned that AFI is featured in the October 2009 issue of Revolver magazine. The article reveals some new information about Crash Love. The new info and quotes from Davey are outlined below.
Page 1 Scan
Page 2 Scan
Studio Photo

* Davey and Jade began writing the album in November 2007 and continued for nine months.
* “There aren’t any loop-based songs. There’s no 37mm, or Love Like Winter, or even Miss Murder. The focus of this album is guitars. It’s a guitar record.”
* “After spending a lot of time writing and recording so much dance music, when Jade and I began to write Crash Love, we were really inspired to write rock songs. The melodies that were coming out of me were more bluesy, and Jade was coming out with sleazier riffs.”
* The record will sound “more like four guys playing in a room together than Decemberunderground did.”
* “I would be shocked if our fans didn’t like this record. Every time I run into somebody who asks me about the record, I’m just really excited to talk to them… I love it, man.”

New AFI Titles Revealed on BMI’s Licensing Page

Four new songs composed by Davey, Adam, Hunter and Jade have been found on the BMI Repertoire, a searchable index of songs licensed under BMI, which stands for Broadcast Music Incorporated.

It is yet unknown whether they are Crash Love B-sides, if they’ll be included in the singles, or if any of them will be the final unknown title on Crash Love. Please click on each link to go see the licensing page:

1. Breathing Towers To Heaven
2. Too Late For Gods
3. We’ve Got The Knife
4. Where We Used to Play

The following songs that have been confirmed to be on Crash Love have been licensed, along with the other 9 songs we previously posted:

1. Cold Hands
2. End Transmission

Also, Fainting Spells and The View From Here are licensed. This proves that, unlike some people thought, Chair Kicking and Suicide Romantic were not renamed to The View From Here and Fainting Spells. All 4 songs are unique:

5. The View From Here
6. Fainting Spells

Crash Love Now Available For Pre-Order

The regular edition of Crash Love is now available for pre-order here on Amazon for $13.98 and here on Interpunk for $14.00.
The rumored Crash Love Double Deluxe Edition, reportedly housed in a tin box, has popped up as a future item on Amazon (see update), and an item already available for pre-order on Interpunk. On Interpunk, the item costs $19.00.

Update: The double deluxe edition is now available for $19.98 on Amazon.com here.
On an unrelated note, there are track listings popping up all over the Internet for Crash Love listing that the 11th track is “TBA” and that the 12th track is “End Transmission.” Assuming that the tracklisting on AFI’s Official Web site is correct, the 11th track is “End Transmission” and the 12th track is “Torch Song.” The latter has not been posted on the official site, but it comes to us from a review of a 5-song Crash Love sampler.

New Contest: Win two full AFI shows on DVD

We at DarkFlame’s AFI Community (soon to be AFI Ignite) are proud to announce we’re holding a contest! For clarification, this is NOT an official AFI contest.

AFI usually plays a couple of songs off a new album live before it comes out. They played Narrative of Soul Against Soul before Black Sails came out, played Sacrifice Theory before The Art of Drowning came out, played Girl’s Not Grey, The Leaving Song Pt. II and Dancing Through Sunday before Sing The Sorrow came out, and Miss Murder and Kill Caustic before Decemberunderground came out.

Here’s the deal: AFI will play their first show of the Crash Love era on August 20nd 2009 at the Frequency Festival in Austria. To enter, e-mail us the titles of the NEW song(s) you think they will play that day (contact info is below). If you pick song X and song Y, but they only play song X, you lose. If they play song X, Y and Z, you lose. The song order is not of importance.

The prize? You will get the full Virgin Festival 2007 and Club Laga 2000 shows, for you to watch on your TV in all their qualitiness! The Virgin Festival show was recorded directly from TV do DVD and the Club Laga show was a transfer from the original tape to DVD.

If you win, you’ll be given the download links for the files and further instructions on how to make they work. You can send your submission (one submission per person) to pablo@theartofdrowning.net. Subject: “AFI DVD contest.” Good luck! Note: the submissions are now closed. See the note at the top of this post.
-Jason and Pablo
P.S. Keep in mind that AFI does not always play the lead singles from the upcoming album. Everybody will most likely include “Medicate” in their guess, so dare to be different. You could win!

"Less Than 2 Weeks" Until Medicate Hits Radio

Listen up @kroq AFI fans! We are ALL ACHING to hear the new AFI. I’ve just been given word that we have less than two weeks!

So @kroq AFI fans, 2 weeks is not so far away. Be patient. All good things are worth the wait and AFI is definitely worth that and more!

Crash Love To Be Released September 25 In Australia

In the Bombshell Magazine review of the 5-track sampler of Crash Love published Tuesday night, the review said “‘CRASH LOVE’ – AVAILABLE SEPTEMBER 25TH.” Bombshell is an Australian publication, so unless the release date information in the review was a mistake, Crash Love will be released in Australia on September 25th, four days before it is released in the US.

"Torch Song" Is Last Title, 5-Track Sampler Of Crash Love Reviewed By Bombshell Magazine

Bombshell Magazine’s Deborah Konopnicki has received a 5-track sampler of Crash Love. From her review of the 5 songs, we have learned that the 12th track on the album is “Torch Song.” Click here to read her full post on Bombshell Magazine’s Web site. Here is what she had to say about each of the songs featured on the sample.

Torch Song: starts off sounding quite eerie before launching into a rocking guitar and drum fueled beat. This transforms into a rather epic sounding piece that is mimicked during the chorus, which features a strong choral backing that is sure to be replicated by AFI fans in a live setting. This entire song oozes with class due to the grand picture that it paints.. It could have been pulled right out of ‘Sing The Sorrow’, and marked down as one of the more powerful tracks. Davey sounds absolutely fantastic. Gone is his somewhat questionable shriek from the past few years while he delivers a flawless vocal performance. The verses have a slight ‘metal’ quality to them. Jade’s guitar work is again, immaculate. He manages to create the perfect sound for the song, which is sure to surprise and delight AFI fans.

Beautiful Thieves: is a slower song with a driving bass line that develops and builds up into a grand chorus with more backing vocals that fans will lap up. This song seems slightly more morbid with Davey questioning his mortality. He poses a number of questions that are sure to tweak the heartstrings of the listener. The simplicity of the verse leaves you feeling quite venerable, and possibly not expecting such a powerful middle section. AFI sure know how to write an emotional number. The song finishes in the same manner as the opening. Slow and beautiful.

End Transmission: has a slight 80’s vibe to the introduction that is evident throughout the entire song. There is piano present through a large portion which is quite uncommon for AFI, but it doesn’t feel forced. It blends in quite nicely with the vibrant pace. There is nothing much that really stands out for me (compared to the previous two tracks). With that said, it’s already at a much higher standard then Decemberunderground.

Medicate: is a track that has been floating around on the internet for the past couple of weeks, albeit a very poor quality rip from the new guitar hero game. If you were impressed by the rip, then just wait until you hear the song in it’s entirety. This one opens with some very epic guitar that slaps you in the face when Adam and Hunter join, with Davey chiming in with his trademark “oh!”, much like at the start of ‘This Celluloid Dream’. This song is heavy. Not in the Machine Head sense, but it is sure to create a scene at any AFI gig coming up. The opening and first verse “chug” along and cause some rather involuntary head banging. The song slows down at the bridge, leaving Davey quite vulnerable and emotional, with a slight hint of some electronics in the background that are so subtle that it fits in without standing out too much. After jetting back into the chorus, Jade showcases his talents with a blazing guitar solo that makes the song that much more impressive.

Darling, I Want To Destroy You: is another slow starting number that builds into the chorus. The guitar slightly resembles parts of ‘Summer Shudder’ from the previous cd, but only for a moment. The verses wouldn’t be out of place on an MGMT record with a vibe very similar to a couple of songs off their debut record. This song is clearly written about someone close to Davey, which differs from previous AFI songs. Most of Davey’s lyrics remain quite vague, leaving the listener the ability to develop their own interpretation, while this song is very specific. Compared to the other tracks, this one is quite simple, possibly a little bit similar to “Endlessly, She Said”. It’s not as strong, but it’s still rather impressive.

The reviewer also said:

“I was lucky enough to get a partial insight into the masterpiece that AFI are about to unleash. Like all of their work, this is nothing like their previous release. For me, this picks up where “Sing The Sorrow” left off. Unlike 2006′s effort, “Crash Love” captures that trademark AFI passion. It’s definitely less aggressive then Sing The Sorrow, but the emotion in the lyrics and the music are almost numbing. The only disappointing aspect of “Crash Love” is the apparent lack of another AFI trademark in an introduction track. Hopefully this leaves the door open for Miseria Cantare to make an appearance once again.”

It also turns out that the reviewer is a Despair Faction member. In the thread on the Official Message Board regarding this preview, she said the following:

“What I’ve heard so far is REALLY great. I haven’t NEEDED to listen to songs over and over like this in a little while. I figure that I was in the same place as most people on the board.. slightly hesitant with what the end result would be, but man.. I don’t have anything much else to say.”

“I haven’t heard the entire album yet.. and STS is just about my all time favorite cd, so [it being as good] is a BIG call! I guess I’m looking at it from the angle of progression. It doesn’t mimic STS, but you can make a comparison and still appreciate the new direction. I hope that makes sense.”

AFI Practice For European Festival Run

Hunter made a Twitter update late Monday night: “New Moon screening and AFI practice = long day! I need to get some beauty sleep. I’ll let you know if it works.” This suggests that the band is already beginning to practice for their upcoming batch of festival show dates.
The mini-tour begins on August 22 with the Area 4 Festival in Germany, and ends on August 30 with with the Reading Festival in the UK. In the middle, they will play shows at the Highfield Festival, Melkweg in Amsterdam, and the Leeds Festival on August 23, 26, and 29 respectively.

* Says Davey, “there’s this really cool thing that we’re doing with iTunes where there’s going to be a special edition on iTunes that has all of this personal and unique information from each of us, I believe it’s going to be called “Cocktail”, and it’s the first time that they’ve done their own digital special editions, and we’re going to be part of that.”

Crash Love Lyrics Revealed

On Monday afternoon on AFireInside.net, the eighth track, “Ok, I Feel Better Now,” was turned into two separate links. Clicking on “I Feel Better Now” will take you to a picture of Davey reclining in an armchair listening to music on headphones. Clicking on “Ok” will take you to a text file of lyrics from “Ok, I Feel Better Now.

“I died for the last lie, and the heartbreak for the first time, I could not take til I made you cry. This is what you taught me. This is what you taught – and I learned well – to recognize that feeling easily can be dispelled. Show your wounds I’m bored with mine. Nothing is new.”

Share what you think of these lyrics in the comments.
