Review of London Show in Rockzone Magazine

Thanks to Ms. Bitter, one of our readers, we now have a review of the London show from Spanish magazine Rockzone. Here is the full review:

Seven months after the debut of Crash Love, AFI finally returned to Europe to present their eight studio album with a small United Kingdom tour and some extra dates in European soil with the give it a Name and Groezrock. For me it’s inconceivable that they’re unable to do more shows with a record as solid as this one. The honor of opening this show went to The Dear & Departed who almost didn’t make it to London after their van was stopped in Notthingham by the police (apparently, their driver was not insured). Although their frontman Dan Smith (who is also an incredible tattoo artist who works for Kat Von D, famous for her work on L.A.Ink) says that his music is not for anyone, I still think that they should be more popular. Clearly influenced by the post punk British scene and new wave bands like New Order, The Church, The Cure and The Smiths, their music is an oddity in a somewhat boring scene. They have just published their second work, an EP titled Chapters so we had the pleasure to enjoy the beautiful “Tambourine Love”, “It looks like rain”, “matter of time” as well as “Hometown Hero” and “Masquerade”. It was a short but delightful setlist. The next ones were New York hardcore legends Sick of It All. In spite of playing almost in the dark, they destroyed the stage with “Scratch the Surface”, “Built to Last” and “Us Vs.Them”. It was fun for me seeing the faces of some AFI fans who clearly had no idea of Who Sick Of It All were and didn’t even now how to react to their brutality. I felt embarrassed fro them.

And finally the moment we were waiting for. The predominant white color form Decemberunderground tour has left the place to the golden shades of Crash Love. Surprising me they took the stage with” Medicate” instead of “Torch Song” that had been the opening song for their American tour. Anyone who has seen them live knows that Davey Havok, Jade Puget, Adam Carson and Hunter Burgan never disappoint and always include enough songs to satisfy all their fans. But If I’m totally sincere it upset me that they didn’t play more Crash Love song (I would have killed to listen To “Veronica Sawyer Smokes”). What we had was a well-balanced combination of the hits from Sing The Sorrow (“Girls Not Grey”, ”The Leaving Song Part II”, “Dancing Through Sunday”, ”Death of Seasons”) with songs from their last album (“End Transmission”, “I AM Trying Very Hard To Be Here”, “Beautiful Thieves”, “Too Shy Too Scream”), a couple of the audiences favorites (“Days Of The Phoenix”, “Love Like Winter”), some of the old songs like “Love Is A Many Splendored Thing” and the surprise of the night “File 13” that doesn’t get played that often. Davey’s voice sounded better than ever, specially because he doesn’t scream than much anymore, and although he is the only guitarist, Jade makes a good job recreating the sound of the albums. Obviously they didn’t forget “Miss Murder” and “Kill Caustic”, but personally the culminating moments were “On The Arrow” and “The Interview”. A shame that Jade’s mike was so low, because when he sang the last verse in “The Interview” we almost couldn’t hear him (o maybe, it’s that he doesn’t like to sing). From what I’ve heard, there’s not going to be another European tour until the next album. If that’s the case, it really is a shame that, once again, Spain has not the opportunity to live such an unforgettable night like this, which ended brilliantly with “Silver And Cold.”

Lee Martin Will No Longer Be AFI's Webmaster

If any of you follow Lee Martin on Twitter, you may have noticed that he has decided to leave his work at Silva Artist Management and instead work freelance. He wrote earlier this week "So, the answer is yes, I will be freelancing again fulltime in 3 weeks." When we asked him whether or not he would still be webmaster of the respective sites he is on, including the Despair Faction, he responded with a simple "negative." There is no news on who, if anyone, will replace him. We wish Lee the best of luck with his future endeavors.

Sergio's White Hot Top 5 Critique's Beautiful Thieves

A show on Current TV called Infomania has a segment called Sergio's White Hot Top 5 where Sergio counts down the top 5 videos of certain genres from different sources every week. A couple of weeks ago they counted down the top alternative tracks on Vevo which AFI was a part of. Although short and unflattering, it is interesting to see how other people view the video. AFI comes in at number 4. View below.

Save A Scream.com Interviews Davey

SaveAScream.com interviewed Davey after the interview for Black Velvet Magazine at the Birmingham show. They talk about veganism, Zu Boutique, horse races, and Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Here is an excerpt from the article:

“Really I went vegan for two reasons; 1) I really try to live the healthiest lifestyle that I can and to be vegan is the healthiest diet that you can live – as long as you’re not eating a bunch of French fries – you can abuse the diet! But when eating properly it is the healthiest way you can live and it’s the best for your body and thereby your mind. Also I have respect for animals. I love animals. I really don’t feel that it is our right to abuse them and I would feel awful abusing them for any reason. When I was vegetarian I knew very well that it wasn’t enough, that just because I wasn’t actively murdering animals that I was torturing them by consuming things like milk and cream and cheese and whatnot. Then I finally made the step to commit myself to a cruelty-free lifestyle because I just felt it was right.”

Trivia Tuesday: Jade Puget

It's back! After nearly 4 months without it, we have decided to bring back Trivia Tuesday. This time around instead of albums, we will give you quirky facts about the band members. First up, Jade Puget. We hope you enjoy this reader favorite being brought back to life.

* Jade played in a few bands before joining AFI: Redemption 87, Influence 13, and Loose Change
* Jade also played in a band called Taxidermy where he played bass and was in two bands with Smith, one pop-punk and the other hardcore.
* Jade has a chihuahua named Munch, after Detective Munch on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit
* He has remixed multiple artists' songs such as Marilyn Manson's "Heart Shaped Glasses" and The Static Age's "Vertigo."
* He was named Alternative Press' Best Guitarist of 2009 in a readers' poll
* The first song Jade wrote for AFI was Malleus Maleficarum. Malleus Maleficarum is a famous treastie on witches by Heinrich Kramer that was an attempt to refute the belief that witchcraft was not real.
* He has multiple tattoos that are homages to bands that he likes such as "Boy Don't Cry" on his arm (tribute to The Cure) and "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (a homage to Joy Division).
* Jade currently uses a Diamond Amplification Nitrox for his live setup and that he used a Gibson Cloud 9 Les Paul for a good deal of the recording of Crash Love.
* Also on the recording of Crash Love, he used wine glasses and pencils to make certain sounds
* Jade's half-brother, Gibson, is in The Spoken Word
* Jade is the only member of AFI who has a college degree
* Davey and Jade share vocals on the infamous "Chicken Song" while Hunter plays the piano. In an interview on Buzznet, Jade commented on the song saying: "I just had a strange cravings during the recording of Black Sails. I was like a pregnant woman. I wrote it after eating a bunch of chicken and granola; I was inspired. It wasn't supposed to be recorded." (of course, this quote is part of the joke)
* Jade is a big fan of Conan O'Brien
* Jade is technically featured on the Dork 7" since it is a split with Loose Change, which Jade played guitar for when the 7'' was recorded.
* Jade has said that 'Darling, I Want To Destroy You' was such a different song from any other on Crash Love because "it was the only song, since I've been in the band, that was written from a jam. All of the songs have always been written by Davey and I and that one was we were just in practice one day and I started playing the riff and we just kind of jammed out the song real quick and it became that one."

Mulatschag Interviews AFI

Mulatschag, which is on cable in Vienna, Hamburg and Berlin, and worldwide via live stream, interviewed AFI around the time of their Vienna, Austria show. They touched on topics like pressure from labels, marketing, Davey modeling Tarina Tarantino, 911 and where they were when it occured, growing up in the 80's, sexual preference in the 80's, and what will become of AFI in 100 years. Fall Child Of the Month: Drew D

In continuation with our new feature, we present you with May's Fall Child of the Month. Drew D, who is a regular here, is extremely committed to AFI and shows his support by helping out with the Blaqk Audio fansite Bright Black Heaven. In speaking with him, he told us more about himself:

* How did you discover AFI? The first song I ever heard by them was believe it or not "Rabbis are Roadkill on Route 37", off of the Myspace Music CD. I actually didn't like them at all at first! "Miss Murder" is what hooked me and started me to become a fan. Now RR37 is one of my most favorite songs, ironically.
* What is your favorite AFI song? Currently, "End Transmission". Though, having to pick a favorite AFI song is like choosing over people's lives! My favorites change all the time.
* What is your favorite music besides AFI? I love electronic music. Would you of guessed I'm a Blaqk Audio fan too? :P I really listen to just about everything though.
* What are some of your hobbies/interests? Video games, photography, building websites, and Photoshop.
* What are your career aspirations or goals? I would love to one day work for a band I enjoy (like AFI), and design artwork, websites, and manage their online content. But right now, my main goal is to just get any kind of job; I need to work.
* Why should you become fan of the month? I would love for people to know more about me, and to have that possibility of being recognized by the band themselves. And I pretty much visit this blog periodically every 5 minutes or so haha, I've followed you guys from the start and cannot thank you enough for all the effort that has gone into this.
