Weekend Discussion: Darling, I Want To Destroy You

What are your thoughts about Darling, I Want To Destroy You? I've read about an unusually big dislike for this song. Personally, it's my favorite song of the Crash Love sessions. I've seen people saying the distorted vocals ruin the song but for me they just add an amazing mood/atmosphere to the song.

So post in the comments how you feel about the song, which along End Transmission could easily be the third single. As a bonus, here is "Darling, I Want To Destroy You" being soundchecked. (It hasn't been played live yet)

Win!

  1. I really like Darling, unfortunately I can't see it being the next single. I like the lyrics and the distortion in the vocals.By the way, at the risk of sounding like an idiot, what is a soundcheck? Is it just to see if all the equipment is working and stuff? Thanks

  2. Yes, and to test the audio/volume levels, guitar tunning, etc.

  3. Hmm, cause I remember hearing that they often soundcheck Darling and Sacrilege but they have never played them at a show (that may be different now). I'm curious as to why they wouldn't play either of those songs; they're some of the better ones.

  4. They said they had problems with Sacrilege during sound check.

  7. Nice video, and I used to like Darling a lot more, but it's one of the songs that now that I finally know wtf you are talking about with the vocal effect it just gets under my skin, but I love to sing along to it. It's so much fun. lol But that effect.... yeah, no.

  11. I love the song, one of my favorites, lyrics are beautiful, davey sounds wonderful!

  12. vocal effects? you guys are dumb, its the first time davey ever used a filter for the vocals, thats it! And it sounds great, wouldnt be the same w/o it. I dont think there is going to be another single or video after beautiful thieves (miss murder and love like winter were the only 2 videos for DU) But if there happens to be one more single im almost positive Darling will be next.

  13. I like the song. It's not in my top list of favorite songs but I don't really dislike it either. I particularly like the chorus. I would much rather End Transmission be a single than it, though.

  14. Dominic it is not the first time he's ever used a filter. Have you heard Crop Tub? I believe in parts of This Celluloid Dream he used one too, but don't hold me to that.

  15. Decemberunderground had 3 singles

  16. He definitely used a vocal effect in This Celluloid Dream. No one complains about that, though. I personally love this song. I think it's one of the better songs on the album. I hope they play it live one day.

  18. I really like Darling i want to destroy you.Is one of my favorites Crash Love songs. But i think that it wouldnt be good as single. In the other hand if that song had a video would be cool.I think that there are others songs that would be better as a single like End transmission or Torch Song.If they make a video for Torch Song or End Transmission they would be cinematic and very cool cause i think they're more than just songs. They have a kind of atmosphere.I hope to watch Beautiful Thieves soon.

  19. I can't stand Darling. The vocal effect just turns me off in an instant. Put in perspective, I've listened to the rest of the album including B-sides no less than 47 times on itunes alone. Darling has 8 plays. Also, if Interscope has any concept of making money, End Transmission is the next single. Plain and simple it is the most radio-friendly, mainstream-appealing alternative rock song on the album.

  20. In the "Just like romantic verses.." part in This Celluloid Dream, Davey uses a very similar vocal effect as to the one in Darling. Why is the one in Darling so annoying to people and not the one in Celluloid? I dont understand why people hate it so much. I think it was a bandwagon thing. One person said it, then other people were like "Hey, yeah that sucks!"

  21. I don't find Darling annoying like some but I also don't see anything special about it. Its nowhere near by top 10 favorite AFI songs, not even top 10 of this album. Plus I think its more than likely if another single is released it will be Veronica Sawyer.

  22. illogicaldreamer- For me it's because it's on the WHOLE song. It's cool for a bit, but definitely by about the midway point of the song I'm over it.I think that in time that'll probably go away, but for now.. yeah, no. Not really. Which is kinda sad cause it's got some of my favorite lyrics- I like the bridge.

  23. Don't make assumptions that everybody who disagrees with you must be a bandwagoner. Amazingly enough, people can just dislike it, and there doesn't have to be a reason why they dislike Darling's vocal distortion and not Celluloid. However, if it's reasons you want, maybe they think in the context of Celluloid, it fits. Maybe they are okay with it because it isn't used very much at all in Celluloid. Maybe they just deal with it in Celluloid because the rest of the song is epic. I would argue that none of those are true for Darling, in my opinion. For that reason, I will openly admit to loving Celluloid Dream and not giving a rat's ass about Darling. Honestly, I think Darling has poor sounding vocals from the distortion, weak instrumentation, lackluster percussion, and decent lyrics. And the mastered album version sounds more like a demo to me than anything else (Yes, I know it's because of the "jam session" way of writing the song...I think they should stick to their typical methods...) I'm sorry, but AFI can and does do better...on 11 other songs on Crash Love.

  24. disagree. There were 3 singles for DU, but only Murder and love winter got music videos. Darling is a great song, the guitar verses and davey filter vocals are very pretty and atmospheric that explode into a catchy hook. I think this is the last single for sure.

  25. So what? DU still had 3 singles. Video AND CD is not mandatory. Silver and Cold had a video and not a CD and it was a single. The Missing Frame had no video but it had a CD single. Both singles.

  26. I'm with Pablo. I'm missing why how many singles StS and DU had is relevant. Some bands put out albums with 5 singles... Green Day's American Idiot did title track, Holiday, Boulevard, September, and JoS. It just depends on what the label wants and what the rich guys in suits think will sell. If Interscope thinks AFI needs 2 singles, they'll have 2. If they want 5, they'll have 5. It won't have jack to do with what AFI did in the past with regard to physical singles, digital singles, or music videos...
