  1. Is it pretty much the same setlist each time? :/ I just wish they would play at least The Days of the Phoenix or something, ah well. I'm seeing them tomorrow, have amazing seats. If the arena is nearly empty (most likely) then I'll probably run up to the front anyways. :P Super excited, though I wish the setlist was better. But I know it really can't be, because none of the people there for GD (like 98% of the people) don't really know/care about AFI.

  2. Yeah, I have an excel sheet predicting all the setlists lol, I've been right every time except a few shows ago they started doing Silver and Cold before Miss Murder lol. They're all the same except for sometimes Missing Frame instead of End Transmission. Have fun at the show!

  3. That's the point though, since most of the crowd doesn't care, why do they feel the need to play all of their singles? I seriously doubt those seven songs are the band's favorites, and that they never get tired of them. They should really just play what they like at this point.

  4. They are probably using this tour as a way to reach out to new fans. Which, unfortunately for us, means playing songs that these people perhaps have heard before, or may even know, to connect back with them. With the promotion they got for Crash Love from Interscope, they need this.

  5. i went to the show in hartford and it was great, they need to play songs AFI wants to play, not what the crowd might have heard before, and im not being negative, but... does anyone else get the feeling interscope might drop afi? for STS they had 17 montghs of touring, and for DU they had like 18 months. this year they only got like 11 months, well doesnt matter AFI RULES.

  6. I went to the Montreal show and I was a little dissapointed with the concert.
It wasn't really the performance I was disspointed in, I was more dissapointed in how the entire crowd was practically there for Green Day. And those who were there for AFI were right at the front, and let me tell you, people were really being dicks about passing them in the crowd. But I guess that's what was bound to happen, going to a concert mainly FOR Green Day.
And I do agree, I wish the set list was bigger and a little more old school.
AFI only played for about 45 minutes, which was also kinda of a bummer.
I still love and cherish AFI though, and they shall always remain as my favourite band.

  7. @shattyfatmas

According to Mikey Rhino on Formspring AFI was signed to a 3 album contract STS being the first and Crash Love being the third.

So if this is true, whatever happens next is in the air.

  8. ^^^ LINK TO THAT PLEASE. THAT IS FANTASTIC NEWS. I THINK AFI CAN TOTALLY FUCKING PULL IT OFF WITHOUT A LABEL. :D YES.

  9. Perhaps AFI could have pulled it off without a label a year and a half after DU and making the same sound as DU had. You're insane to think that after the mediocre sales CL had (despite its obvious excellence) that AFI could do without a label. Their name is simply off the radar in 2010, and will be more so in 2011/12 when #9 drops.

  10. AFI's contract is up with Interscope, hence why Interscope didn't invest any money promoting the record. They could easily bring back the street team and give us stuff to pass around.

  11. @ Danny , omg i forgot about that 3 record deal, what what they will do, maybe they will be independdent. idk, well whatever happens afi is AWESOME and always will be.

  12. I'm not so sure if they could make it independently....they all have very expensive tastes now. While, I know everyone would want them to get off Interscope, I don't see it happening and if they do leave Interscope they will just hop to the next major label. I will find the link, but I have to go through pages and pages on Twitter and Formspring.

  13. the show was great! but green day fans were really mean. i heard some comments making fun of afi too, which broke my heart.
but despite the unresponsive crowd, the boys gave a great show! davey even dedicated a song (can't remember which) to the DF :D

  14. Bands actually make a LOT more on CD sales if they have their own label. However, less units will be sold. But if they made $9 on 10000 CDs instead of 90 cents on 100000 CDs they'd be breaking even.

  15. Actually it wouldn't be so even when they have to use all the money they got from distributing their CDs independently to finance touring, recording, promotion, etc. Being on a label is a band's best bet in this economy. One of my favorite bands was dropped from their big label a year ago and tried the whole self-release route this year and have nothing to show for it really so far. They had no money for recording their album, touring, or pretty much anything to keep their fans happy. They haven't had really any solid plans for their future album and touring until they recently signed on a new label. All of their income as a band for recording and such depended on fans buying their merch and seeing their tiny little club shows.

  16. But I thought STS was released under Dreamworks, or was that a branch of Interscope?

    ReplyDelete
  17. It could work, it could not. It's definitely tough.

Dreammworks folded and Interscope bought them out, hence the contract AFI had with Dreamworks too.

  18. They'd do just fine on a strong independent. Look at Alkaline Trio's latest, which Epitaph put out. It hit number 11 on the Billboard 200, higher than the prior album which was released on a major.

Simply put, if they put out a decent record, people will pay attention. AFI already has a dedicated fan base (myself included) that will buy the record no matter what. It won't be as much of a mega seller as DU, but that hardly qualifies it as a commercial failure. Crash Love hit number 12, and that certainly wasn't, unless people have really low standards of what defines "commercial failure."

  19. I think AFI could make it as an independent band. Look at an artist like Amanda Palmer. She left her record label, Roadrunner, and is now making more money on her own than with them. Plus, AFI has got such a huge and dedicated following, it would work. I just wish for them to have more freedom with their music.

  20. Am I the only one who thinks AFI cares a hell of a lot less about the money than about getting the music out to people who enjoy it? That said, independent releases, as a common rule, do NOT get the same attention as major label releases.

    ReplyDelete
  21. They could definitely make it on Epitaph or a similar label, but completely on their own (starting their own label, possibly) would be a lot more difficult.

    ReplyDelete
  22. ^

Plus they don't enjoy marketing themselves. I would think starting your own label would have a lot to do with marketing and getting your records out there for everyone to reach and they just don't like doing that.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't know....I just can't really see AFI going to Epitaph or something like that.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Anything is possible with Epitaph. They just picked up Weezer. Who would've thought?

AFI have always made carefully considered career decisions. They twice chose to remain independent when met with major label propositions.

  25. I will say this maybe because I`m a big fan of AFI...I don`t think major label had or could influence their music, lyrics or choice of songs for next album.AFI is doing what they want with their music and I just can`t imagine someone ordering them to play this or that.On that note I think there would be no difference in sound on next album if AFI is on a major label or not,it would just make it less advertised. Conclusion:major label-Yes,maybe other label then Interscope-Absolutely

  26. This is the same setlist for the show in Michigan last night as well. I don't know how to submit stuff tho so I figured I'd just comment here.

  27. How about AFI on Fat Wreck Chords? Davey and Fat Mike are known to be friends, it seems like the perfect fit to me.

    ReplyDelete
  28. CL is far from excellence, it's really not fair to just blame Interscope entirely for the album not selling. The album is just too far left from the mainstream.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Fat is exclusively a punk label, so that probably won't happen. There's no harm in fantasizing though! Fat Tour 2011: AFI, Strung Out, and the Lawrence Arms. I'd die.
